I believe that it is appropriate for athletic teams to have Native American mascot names because it is still a part of our past. Native Americans helped us when we first came to America and we also spent our first Thanksgiving with the Native Americans. Teams should not be forced to change them because that seems too over dramatic and not every person is bothered by it. Why change it if only a few people are bothered. It can make us look bad by changing it and people will get the impression that we hate Native Americans. This can also make the Native Americans that are still left feel uncomfortable.
I do not understand why you think changing a name of a mascot or team will make the Native Americans feel uncomfortable. You also said that not every person is bothered by it. How do you know that not that many people are bothered by it. A group of the Native Americans had to have complained about the names to change the minds of the teams and owners,
I like how you used the past with the Indians. I think the same way and that we should have Indians names for teams. We should never forget about the past
I completely agree with what you said especially how changing the name could be even more disrespectful to the Native Americans. They may start feeling more angered by the fact we are not trying to connect them with today's society and remember what they have done for us.
I agree with almost everything you said, but I do not understand the point you made where you brought up that they have been a part of American history. I do now know what that has to do with the rest of what you said.
I agree with you on how you said they are part of our history and we should remember them. Also, about how if we change the name it will make us look bad or good to some people.
I agree with you it's honoring our history and the Native Americans. It will be very disrespectful for thinking it's a disgrace. It will show how we feel about it.
I agree with your point about not changing it just because a few people were offended by it. Everyone would then would get the impression that they could change anything if they complain about it enough.
I think that they shouldn't really name there teams after Indians it could be offensive to others but also it could make a good point to name after a Indian HERO since they are maybe like saying that he is a hero so lets name are team this. If you have to think of it as it could go both ways then you are better off not naming your team after a Indian. I think that its important to address this to other teams so they could prevent this and I think they should be forced to change them for the best of it so it doesn't become a problem.
I think that athletic teams should not have any kind of Native American mascot names or logos. It is very degrading and insulting to Native Americans. Having a mascot as a Indian is just like having a mascot as a black, Hispanic, or white person and calling them a different name. The NFL is trying to change the name of the Washington Redskins and this just goes to show that having a mascot or logo like a Indian is racist and offensive just like any other insult. I also think that teams in all sports should change their teams names, logos, and mascots so they can stop offending the Native American People.
I do agree with you because it can be flipped on any other race and not be right. It is not right for Native Americans, African American, Hispanic, and Caucasian. I think they should just change it and be done with it.
I understand what you are saying. The Washington Redskins is very degrading name. It is not right. If it was named the Brownskins they would have changed it years ago.
I do think it is appropriate for schools to have Native American team names. There is nothing wrong with that. If anything, it should be an honor to have a school or team named after a group. It is not like the teams and schools are a disgrace to the name. The teams and schools are meant for only good things. I do not think that the teams and schools should be forced to change their names. If they were of bad representation then, I could see why they would be forced to change their names.
I can see what they are saying about the Mascots name, but the way I look at the name "Red Skins" isnt only the color of their skin of the person, but who the Red Skins were in history. Without the Indians there wouldnt be no French and Indian war to protect the new colonies and the natural froots of our country. The Native Americans took an important role in our nations history and shouldnt be reconized for the color of their skin. There for I think they shouldnt change their name.
I do not think it is appropriate for sports teams on any level to have a Native American mascot name. Just because there may not be as many Native Americans who take offense I still think it is not right. This can go for any ethnicity and be an inappropriate mascot name and people would also not like it. If this was switched to a different race it would have been changed both name and logo. I think they should at least be forced to change the logo. Since the Redskins name has been around for a while they may not want to. Then the next question is what would the new name be?
I do not agree with you on this one. There is no reason why Native American mascot names should be changed. You say that you think it should be changed and that it is wrong, but you have no support as to why it is so offensive.
I disagree with you on this one because no one ever had a problem with them until a couple years ago. They shouldn't have to the team or mascot didn't do anything to discriminate natives
I disagree with you because it was never a problem until about 10 years ago. Having a mascot of a Native is honoring them because they were here before we were.
I do not agree with you as Nat said in the comment above you have no support to what you are trying to say. The Native American names used as mascot names are not in anyway used to offend them but to honor the history and the Native Americans.
I agree with some of that but I disagree as to why it should be banned. Native Americans are borne celebrated rather than made fun of. But I can also see why Natives would take offense.
I believe that it is appropriate for athletic teams to have Native American mascot names. In my perspective, the mascot name the "Redskins" have been around for a long period of time. I do not see why it is such a big of a deal now? They should have changed it from the very beginning. The team itself is not specifically calling out an individual by that name. In that sense, it is not hurting anyone. It is typically just a team mascot. Look at this in a positive viewpoint, Redskins were badly looked upon, and once the teams do well in their season they will be looked greatly on.
This is a great point because it really is only a mascot and it is not trying to start anything because of their team mascot. They are representing the team, not going against it.
I believe that it is appropriate for athletic teams to have Native American mascot names because it can make native Americans feel different and unloved by others. Native Americans are just like everyone else in this world and mistreating them will ruin reputations and can lead to more problems. A team can have any name they want as long as it doesn't interfere with anyone religion or culture. Everyone in this world is the same and everyone needs to treat each other the way they would want to be treated because everyone has the same feelings and hurting others will get u no where in life.
I do not get what you are trying to say. First you say that it is appropriate but then say that mistreating them will ruin their reputations? I think having the name is mistreating them.
I believe it's appropriate for athletic teams to have Mascot names that represent Native Americans. They have in one way or another impacted the growth of our country. I do not think it should matter what the Mascot for the team is just like it does not matter what color anyone is. Also, I do not understand why all of a sudden "Redskins" needs to be changed. Their Mascot has been around for decades. Why is it such a big deal now? Unless everyone is in favor to change it without affecting anyone, then it is okay.
I like your point of why all of a sudden others want it changed. That's true, why now? Maybe they just want to try to make the season difficult for the school? They may have a grudge against them other than the "name".
I agree with you that they shouldn't have to change the "Redskins" all of a sudden when its been around forever. Your right if it don't matter what color you are, it shouldn't matter what mascot you have.
I believe that it is appropriate for athletic teams to have native american mascot names. The teams are not using the name to make fun of it or mock Native Americans. Fans of the teams take pride in the mascot and would consider themselves a big fan. For example, the Cleveland Indians take pride in their name and are even nicknamed The Tribe. I would understand if the mascot names are being used purposely to make people angry or are just upright offensive, but the names are being used for fans to like them. I think it's also appropriate for any race name to be used for a mascot or team as long as no intent to be hateful is used.
I agree with you because teams should have some natitive back round. The teams should not have to say we don't want to play them because there team mascot is racists
I think that it is fine for sports teams to have native American as your team name. I don't think it is making fun of the natives, to me it's respecting them. Natives was a big part of this country when we first came here. No native American should feel like their getting discriminated because the teams are not making fun of them. Their not pointing out and the mascot doesn't give native Americans a bad rep. The teams for a long time have had natives American names and mascots. For an example the Washington Redskins. They have been around for a long time. Just till now no one ever wanted them to change their name. They never did anything to make fun of Indians so why should they.
I think it is appropriate to have Native American mascot names. Its not affecting anyone but the few people that don't like it. The names have been around for so long and now out of no where they are making a big deal about it. Changing it can make a lot more people that approve mad then the few that disapprove. We should just keep the names as it is and not ruin the tradition, its just a mascot.
I believe that it is appropriate for athletics teams to use Native Americans mascot names. The NFL has a team that uses a Native American mascot name called the Washington Redskins. Washington has used the Redskins name for 83 years, and now they want to change it. They should not be able to change because everyone has been fine to stick with it. If they wanted to change it 83 years ago, then it's a different story because people would not be fine with the name. Sports are not being racist to the Native Americans because they are honoring them since they had this land before we did.
I agree, I feel most teams choose their names by the power of the name or the story behind it. Not to be rude and offensive. I don't understand why most think that if there's a name like this they think their being racist. This time and age is not like the past.
I agree when you say that they are not being racist but they are honoring native americans. The teams are confident enough and proud enough to embrace the name as their own.
I believe that it is appropriate to name a team after Native American important people. Why I feel it is appropriate is because we are using there names to represent there team and the spirit that they have and use. Some people may say it’s inappropriate because it may be used to offend people who pay a lot of attention to them. I believe that if they want to name there mascot that name and shall be it and leave them alone. One name can mean a lot of things just like the term a picture means one thousand words this mascot means the spirit for there team.
I believe it's fine to have a mascot such as the Indians, red skins, etc. It's not like they purposely choose that name to be offensive. No, they choose it because the name has history, has a story behind it. It shows power and pride. Plus, the athletes of those schools aren't responsible for choosing the name either. So why get so offended. Even if you feel offended you should let it slide because it's no one's fault that they have that mascot. Don't get so over the top. In this day and age, no one is terribly against native Americans.
I agree with you Sara. I like how you said that it shows power and pride because the Native Americans really are apart of our history. It shouldn't matter, we are all equal.
I believe Native American mascot names should not be banned.Having a native American name of a mascot is a way of celebrating and honoring our country's history. I believe the schools with a mascot that has a native American name did not mean to name it to insult anyone or get anyone angry. They were created to honor the school’s name. I think native Americans should not feel disrespected in any way they should be happy that schools have mascots named after them because after all they are the first people that have been here before all of us.The schools athletes or students should not be blamed for choosing the name they were not the ones that had any vote in that.
I agree wit you that its a way of celebrating and honoring the Native Americans. They shouldn't feel disrespected because its not like were making fun of them, just representing.
I agree wit you that its a way of celebrating and honoring the Native Americans. They shouldn't feel disrespected because its not like were making fun of them, just representing.
Don't forget to put a space between a period and a new sentence. Other then that, I like what you wrote. I would be happy if a schools Mascot represented my culture. They shouldn't make a big deal about this.
I believe that the names and mascots of any sports teams should not be forced to change them if they have the name of a Native American. I believe if they are not slandering the race that they should not have to change it. They are simply using the name of a Native American as the team name. I feel as if they are honoring the person they are using. I would understand if they were degrading the race then it would be a whole different story. For example the University of North Dakota mascots name was the Fighting Sioux and they were forced to change it. I don't believe that was necessary. They should feel pride and joy that one of their own is the name of a teams mascot. They have team names such as the Fighting Irish and no one says a thing about that.
I do not think that mascots of Native Americans should be banned from professional sports. If anything I think that having Native American mascots helps Americans remember the history of our country. Personally if I were Native American I would be happy that a professional sports team is representing my race. I understand if Native Americans are affended but they also need to see the goods that come out of it. It is not like sports teams are poking fun at them, instead they are inspired by Native Americans and inspire their fans also. I believe that sports teams have huge respect for Native Americans that is why they chose them as their mascot.
I agree with everything you said. Native Americans are apart of our history and should be acknowledged and embraced because we wouldn't be here without them.
I believe that it is appropriate for athletes teams to have Natice Americans mascot names. They could put what ever they want it doesn't affect them. It's part of our history. Why change it know it will do nothing but cause more problem it help our history in America came together
But it offends some people and best thing to do is to choose a name no one would get offended from. Less problems and it will help u focus at the game.
I believe it is appropriate to use Native American names as mascots because it is a way of remembering where we came from. In school we focus so much on other forms of discrimination throughout our history, but we just briefly acknowledge how Native Americans were practically thrown out of their country. By having mascots known as different Native Americans is a way of embracing our nations history, whether bad or good. That is my opinion; Native American descendants might have a different point of view than me. They might feel that it is offensive and discriminating, but I just see it as a way to remember our country's history.
Even though it's not insulting to you, it is to native Americans. So I disagree, it's not right to make them feel like people are being racist towards them. The name should be changed
The thought of the team thinking of the mascot its wrong and weird of them. I think no matter what the mascot I think all its there for is to pep the crowd. Its not to be racist its just for fun. Its not like people purposely chose the name to be racist. I think it an over reaction of a team thinking that the school was trying to be racist. I think they should rethink about how its racist and why they think they shouldn't play them. The team should play them and see who wins no matter what
I disagree even though the really probably don't want to insult anybody. The fact of the matter is that people are getting offended. So if they get offended they should change it.
Yes because it is racist since it is talking about the Native Americans. I believe it is a very inappropriate name and it should be changed immediately. I also think it won't be that big of a deal either because it is just a name. If you change a name, nothing else will change. The team and players will pay the same but they have a different name. The team that forfeited probably were very offended. I feel like there are plenty of different mascot names to choose from. Best thing to do is choose a name that no one would get offended from.
I believe that it is appropriate for teams to use Native American names to name their team mascots. Teams use the mascot to reflect the personality of their teams. Often times when a mascot is a bull or and eagle it means they are strong and independent. When a certain team uses a Native American tribe to name their mascot it means that they look up to that tribe, their culture, and history. I believe it is used to honor the Native Americans and not to mock them. By using that specific name the team carries on the history, past, and traditions of the tribes and the Native Americans. How silly and disrespectful would it be if a team used these names to make fun of the Native Americans. Actions like these would reflect back on the team and the coaches. They would bring shame to the team and that is not what they are looking for. I think that it is unnecessary for teams to change their team mascot name if they are a Native American tribe or ect.
Yes I think they should remove the name because that's upsetting to native Americans. Maybe not to others that are not Native American, it might not offend them because they probably don't care too much. Too use Redskins it's almost an insult. The team should name the mascot something that has no chance of offending anyone that way all parties are happy and there's no chance of anyone being upset. It's not fair to the people who see bad because they feel like there getting made fun of.
I feel that if a school has a Native American name for their mascot its fine as long as they not using it in a negative way or in no kind of disrespect. I think their making something so small to something so big, it’s not like they making the mascot do silly things to make fun of how Native Americans lived they’re life or such things in that situation. To change the mascot name is like changing the name of the school which is really overreacting. It’s like telling the Red Sox to change their name because the White Sox.
To me a good team player is respectful, responsible, and honest. A good team player will try their best to create a bond with their teamates on and off the court. A good or bad friendship between tramates highly effects the outcome of the game and strength of a team. They are hard workers and push to make their teammates better athletes. A good team player will show respect towards upper authorities and themselves. They are there at practice and games to be better at what they do contribute to the team becoming a family. It does not have to be just in sports but life in general. When put in a group with other people a good teammate will bring forth their skills and willingness to participate by communicating with other group members.
ReplyDeleteI think it could go both ways since it could be a part of ones life and make a impact or that it means they respect the native Americans.
DeleteYes I agree with the fact that not everyone is affected by the name so they should not have to make a scene and change their mascot.
DeleteI agree with you because its their choice to pick they're name. It's not rude or disrespectful. Teams should be able to pick whatever name they want.
DeleteI agree with you 100%. We cannot just forget the past and where certain things came from. We have to embrace it and make sure it never is forgotten.
DeleteI do not understand why you think changing a name of a mascot or team will make the Native Americans feel uncomfortable. You also said that not every person is bothered by it. ReplyDeleteI like how you switched from ethnicity to a specific character from the ethnicity. That was a good point, but i still disagree.
DeleteI disagree with your post Devin because like in the Constitution the 1st. Amendment everybody has a right to speak and they have to do it.
DeleteI think that athletic teams should not have any kind of Native American mascot names or logos. It is very degrading and insulting to Native Americans. Having a mascot as a Indian is just like having a mascot as a black, Hispanic, or white person and calling them a different name. ReplyDeleteI totally agree with you. The team is interperating the name the wrong way, looking at the name as an insult rather than a historical trade mark.
DeleteI do not agree with you because it unacceptable for anyone to have a team mascot with that name. how would you like it if it was about your race?
DeleteI agree with you. The teams or school did not mean to put a disgrace to the name. If anything, they always take pride in their mascot!.
DeleteI agree with how it can be an honor to have your group name as a mascot. People are playing for the team and they will gladly represent their team.
DeleteI agree with you because I don't see anything wrong with the name they chose. If people have a problem with it they have to leave and move on with it.

DeleteI believe Native American mascot names should not be banned.Having a native American name of a mascot is a way of celebrating and honoring our country's history.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with you Maggie. I believe that professional sports teams are honoring and celebrating the history of the Native Americans.
DeleteI agree wit you that its a way of celebrating and honoring the Native Americans. They shouldn't feel disrespected because its not like were making fun of them, just representing.
DeleteI agree wit you that its a way of celebrating and honoring the Native Americans. They shouldn't feel disrespected because its not like were making fun of them, just representing.
DeleteDon't forget to put a space between a period and a new sentence. Other then that, I like what you wrote. I would be happy if a schools Mascot represented my culture. They shouldn't make a big deal about this.
DeleteI believe that the names and mascots of any sports teams should not be forced to change them if they have the name of a Native American.
ReplyDeleteI do not think that mascots of Native Americans should be banned from professional sports.
ReplyDeleteI agree with everything you said. Native Americans are apart of our history and should be acknowledged and embraced because we wouldn't be here without them.
DeleteI believe that it is appropriate for athletes teams to have Natice Americans mascot names. They could put what ever they want it doesn't affect them. It's part of our history. Why change it know it will do nothing but cause more problem it help our history in America came together
ReplyDeleteBut it offends some people and best thing to do is to choose a name no one would get offended from. Less problems and it will help u focus at the game.
DeleteI believe it is appropriate to use Native American names as mascots because it is a way of remembering where we came from.
ReplyDeleteEven though it's not insulting to you, it is to native Americans. So I disagree, it's not right to make them feel like people are being racist towards them. The name should be changed
DeleteThe thought of the team thinking of the mascot its wrong and weird of them. The team should play them and see who wins no matter what
ReplyDeleteI disagree even though the really probably don't want to insult anybody. The fact of the matter is that people are getting offended. So if they get offended they should change it.
DeleteYes because it is racist since it is talking about the Native Americans.
ReplyDeleteI believe that it is appropriate for teams to use Native American names to name their team mascots.
ReplyDeleteYes I think they should remove the name because that's upsetting to native Americans.
ReplyDeleteI feel that if a school has a Native American name for their mascot its fine as long as they not using it in a negative way or in no kind of disrespect. I think their making something so small to something so big, it’s not like they making the mascot do silly things to make fun of how Native Americans lived they’re life or such things in that situation. To change the mascot name is like changing the name of the school which is really overreacting. It’s like telling the Red Sox to change their name because the White Sox.
ReplyDeleteTo me a good team player is respectful, responsible, and honest.
