I do not think that the punishment was fair all except for the teaching and modeling behavior classes that the coaches have to take and the sportsmanship classes that the players have to take before they play their next game. The things I dont agree with is that the schools had to pay $500 for each away game they had left on their shedule. That amount added up to $1000 for Hammond and $1500 for Griffith I think that is uncalled for. I do not think that the Indiana High Scool Athletic Association should be able to punish the school as a whole. I think that they should only be able to punish the basketball programs, coaches, and players.
I get what you are saying, but that is how the athletes are going to learn to have good sportsmanship. The athletes need to remember that they are representing their school.
I agree with the teaching, modeling behavior and sportsmanship classes. Both coaches and players have to be able to control themselves to prevent the harsh consequences that will be possibly given to them.
I agree with Moe. I think the team would not take it seriously if the punishment was not harsh and hard for the players and the school to accept. This will help both schools and their members to understand the meaning of what sportsmanship is.
I believe that the punishment is appropriate because the basketball program at Hammond and Griffith high school. They should be kicked out of the state tournament for having a team brawl and pay a fine against the schools. The fine comes out to be $1,000 for Hammond and $1,500 for Griffith. The fine shows that the schools are not as strict towards their athletes. After this fine, the athletic programs will make sure that there schools will change their attitudes. The Indiana High School Association has done the right thing to have both teams forfeit the rest their games for the regular season.
I do not agree with you because they should not have to pay money for acting out. They are in high school it was a fight but that fight does not cost $2,500 in total. The course is necessary to teach these boys a lesson, but that’s it.
I do agree, All of the punishments towards the teams and their coaches are appropriate. violence should not be tolerated period. this is a team sport and their teenagers, practically adults. They need to act like it.
I believe the punishment is appropriate for the teams. Basketball is a team sport, that means not only do you have to be sportsmanship like to your fellow team mates, but to also show respect to other teams. Even if they did do something wrong. Be the better person. So if theses high school students want to act dumb, then they deserve to get punished. Hurting each other is not to be tolerated anywhere. Taking away their seasons and right to compete at state will show them the hard way that violence is not right. So these punishments towards both teams is completely appropriate.
I totally agree with all of the points you made. They did something wrong and now it is time for them to deal with the consequences. The only way they will learn is through a punishment like that.
I think that the punishment was appropriate. I like that both school got fined for every game they had left. Fighting in general is against school policy and any sport games. For every bad choice, come consequences. It is also a good idea to have the boys and coaches go through a sportsmanship class. This will hopefully calm them down and make them think twice before starting trouble on the court. Hammond and Griffith’s mistake can teach other schools and sports programs to act right or the same thing can happen to them. The Indiana High School Association has done the right thing by equally punishing both teams.
I agree with you. No athlete should be able to fight. Maybe now that they were fined and are being forced to take a class the team will learn to have good sportsmanship.
I agree with you because athletes should not fight. Since they have gotten fined they will be forced to take a anger management class and get good sportsmanship.
I disagree with you because why should the schools be fined when its the team and coaches fault. Sending them to the class before there next game is a good enough consequence.
I agree with you, my point was the same, that violence should not be tolerated. the fine and the canceled season for both teams are fitting for them if thy believe that throwing punches will solve anything.
I believe the punishment for both teams is not fair. I like the idea of the Teaching and Modeling course for the coaches and the sportsmanship course for the players because it can help them prevent another incident like this to occur. None of the other punishments are so fair because their season has been taken away from them and you only have a limited time to play basketball in high school until you have to start living in the real world. Basketball is an escape for most athletes and taking that away is taking away their escape from reality.
I don't think that paying the $500 fine was necessary for the schools. They shouldn't be punished for the players acting up. I like the idea of the Modeling and Behavior courses for the coaches and the Sportsmanship course for the players they have to take before there next game. That'll teach them to work with others more and become a good roll model. They shouldn't cancel all regular season games at all levels because high school is limited and you have to make the most of it. They should just be punished with the courses and have the game rescheduled.
I think the punishment that was given to the teams was an appropriate one. Both the coaches and teammates need to learn how to act during a game and respect one another.Basketball just like any other sport is a game that should be played with sportsmanship and not violence. That punishment should make them understand how to act right not only during the game but also outside of it. If they continued to ignore what they were doing someone might have had ended up seriously injured.Playing a sport competitively is not all about winning. Its about sportsmanship being a part of something you enjoy doing not about using violence on the court.
I definitely agree with you. Sportsmanship is one of the most important things in sports and once you go against it, you should be punished. Violence is no acceptable anywhere, especially on a court.
I do agree that basketball is like any other sport and should be played with sportsmanship and not violence. I just do not agree with it being both the players and coaches’ fault. It was strictly the players fault and they should take the sportsmanship course not have to pay.
I strongly agree with the fact that if they continued to play like this, soneone could have ended up seriously injured. It needed to be stopped now because something minor like this can lead to greater violence.
I do not agree at the fact that the two schools had to pay $500. The classes were a good idea to teach them not to fight because it ruins the fun of the game. Sportsmanship is important in playing any sport; if it is played for fun or on an actual team. In my opinion if anyone shows any bit of unsportsmanlike conduct, it will progress and ruin the game. As we all know, all a game really is, is a game, it’s meant to have fun and exercise. Teach those high school boys right from wrong, make them take the course. I just do not think paying fees is any good. Teach the boys a lesson not the parents and coaches.
I think that the fine will actually make them realize that there are consequences to all actions. It will make them think twice before doing something like that again.
I think the punishment for the two high schools are right because they have to pay for their actions. The teams should take sportsmanship classes and the coaches should take classes so they could teach future players. The only thing I disagreed with was that the schools got fined and the school shouldn't be punished just players. I think with this punishment both the teams will learn and never have violence in a game ever again. This punishment did fit the crime and hopefully result in better sportsmanship for all high schools
I also believe that the punishment is justified. I also like that they have to take sportsmanship and anger management classe. That way they can learn what they did was wrong and to not do it again. The only thing I disagree with you about is the fine. I believe that they do need more than just a slap on the wrist. They need to know that there is a lot on the line for acts of violence.
I agree with the two teams taking the sportsmanship class also the coaches taking theirs. I don't agree with the two teams paying $500 for the rest of each game left. Which is going to add up to $1000 for hammon and 1500 fort Griffin. Fighting is a fight suspend the people who actually fought or suspend the team from playing two games or 3. It's a great idea for them to take that class. I think it would improve their game but I don't think it's fair to suspend them for the rest of the year after all the hard work they did. they came this far why would you cancel it on them the fights didnt get them to where they were, their hard work did.
I believe the punishment given to both Hammond and Griffith are appropriate and justified. It may seem unfair that the coaches and schools are receiving the punishment but it's necessary. The school and coach are responsible for their respective basketball program. It is up to them whether they teach the players about sportsmanship or if they just turn the other way and let whatever happens happen. Paying the $500 for each forfeit and having to take the classes will make the players and coaches know that the punishments given are not something to be taken lightly, that the IHSAA will do what it needs to do to make sure that sportsmanship is shown during the games.
How would you feel if your whole season from your favorite sport has been taken away from you because of an incredibly stupid decision? I do not think that anyone would ever want such a harsh punishment, and I don't think you would like it if it happened to you.
I think that the IHSAA did a right thing by suspending both teams. There is an important thing both teams need to underatand, and its sportsmanship. Fighting verbally and physically is not something those players want to have to carry on their shoulders the rest of their life as a habit. They have to get something they love taken away from them like basketball to learn the importance of getting along. What good would it do if they continued to play with that kind of anger. One way or another, little brawls like this can lead to bigger more violent issues. It was a wise decision by IHSAA to suspend their seasons, maybe this can teach the two teams to respect athletes and themselves. For seniors, it can be the end of a road for them and their future in college; but for Juniors they have another year to prove themselves.
I completely agree with your last sentence! This situation will unfortunately be on their record and if they plan to play in college it will be something the colleges won't take lightly. The players just need to learn how to be able to control themselves and that is why they will be taking classes. Great point!
The punishment the teams received was appropriate because their behavior was uncalled for. There are different ways to deal with anger that doesn't result in physical altercations. Playing a sport should be competitive, but not up to the point where the teams are facing each other in a brawl. The coaches and teammates should be punished for their actions. I think those sportsmanship courses will do some good in the remaining players left on the team that were associated with the event. There are going to be fouls and some rough play in a basketball game, but it shouldn't result in physical fights between teams.
I agree with what you said. It was very inappropriate for the coaches and the students to act as they did.The coaches from both schools should have done something about it but obviously they had to face a much harder punishment.
I think this is an appropriate punishment because the athletes have to be disciplined some how. This punishment will also influence many other athletes because after this they will have a lesson to learn. They will now know that if they don't have good sportsmanship it could end their season. I think that IHSA handled this problem using the right actions. It'll teach athletes everywhere that having sportsmanship plays a big role in the game they play. Sometimes the players forget that they are representing their school. When a team has poor sportsmanship it will out dirt on the schools name. Then, whenever people hear that name they will think that the school has teams that play dirty. This is why its important to have good sportsmanship
I agree with you because it makes the athletes from all over Indiana think twice about trying to fight. Schools will be known to have poor sportsmanship after the incident they got into trouble for.
The punishment handed out by the IHSSA members was completely unnecessary and extremely harsh as well. Cancelling their whole season knowing they are both contenders to go deep in the play offs is just wrong. It's not the first time 2 high school teams have brawled and it definitely wont be the last. It happens sometimes in sports, anger builds up so u physically hit somebody sometimes to release that anger so its understandable. Im not saying its ok but both schools did not deserve that harsh of a punishment. I dont agree with the classes they have to attend either for both the coaches and the students. Its something that is uncontrollable, its just part of the game. Games can get extremely intense at times so even if the athletes have took those anger classes prior to the brawl it still probably would have went down.
I agree with you Magd but you have to think that you still in college and your already fighting? This lesson was extremely acceptable because they need to know that the NBA does not accept anything and this class that they need to attend will show them how to respect others.
You brought up a great point how this not being the first fight in a sport. However, not only does it ruin the teams reputation but, also the schools. Anger is something that you are able to control. Be the bigger person!
I agree with you isn't fair to cancel their season for all the work they went through. Of course there consequences but erasing everything form the players isn't the right thing to do. This incident happened before and it will continue to happened.
I believe the punishment for both teams was a appropriate decision. I believe this because it seemed that both teams couldn't handle themselves during a basketball game. Team started out with 4 points and the other team already fought. It was very reckless and inappropriate. It made both schools look bad and they had no respect at all. They let their emotions take effect. When a player has hatred towards the other team, he should use all that emotion and anger during a game. I believe the programs will teach the players to behave themselves and think twice about doing it again.
I believe that the punishment imposed on the two teams was the right decision. This is the only way to prevent further incidents similar to this one. This way the teams will think twice before starting another brawl. I like the idea that they have to take some classes to teach them sportsmanship and anger management classes. Hopefully those classes will make them understand what they did was wrong and to not do it again. I understand that winning is important but the safety and the health of everyone is even more important. It's a physical sport so fouls are going to occur and players need to learn how to recollect themselves after it and just continue playing the game.
I think what they did was to extreme for both teams to have to pay a forfeit fee and for them to have to have dropped all there current games. If I were giving the punishment I would just schedule it another day and for them to put different players on the court. They had to pay $500 each for forfeiting and they were charged an additional $500 for each of there games that they could not play due to the fight. I think it was to much done to the team and they shouldn't have gone that far with the punishment.
I think the punishment that both teams received was fair but I do not agree to the fact that they had to pay a $500 fee to forfeit the game. Hopefully, these boys and coaches realize what they did was inappropriate. This is a good life lesson for anyone who loves to play sports. It's unfortunate they cannot finish their season or go to the state tournament, but life is not fair. Reading this article made me realize that the game is far more important than starting a pathetic fight. Everyone should learn from these schools mistakes and as for the coaches, they could have been more mature and in control of their teams.
I also disagree with the fact that there was a $500 fee for all away games. I Dont think that it was wise and Dont understand what point they were trying to bring across the coaches and players.
I agree with this because there punishment was right and should not be paid with alot of money like that. In my opinion I rather have them just forfeit.
I completely agree that both teams deserved to be kicked out and not being able to play the rest of the season. No teams should fight while playing in front of people that are watching you all over the world. How ever, the fee that they got was just too little because they already are getting paid good money in college and they should of been charged like a rack per game. I think that this lesson that these two teams got is good and they need to learn so that next time when they play, they should think before pulling dumb moves. The coaches, staff and players need to take a break and get their sportsmanship together so they can be able to play with other teams in the future.
I agree with your opinion that both teams deserved to be kicked out. I disagree with your opinion on the fee per game being too little though because the teams are being charged $500 for each road game.
I feel that the boys should not get charged and I have to pay. I think they were good with just getting the classes and not playing in the last couple of games. I feel getting charged period was not a good choice if they did not break anything but having to pay $500 dollars each game is out of control. They can learn their lesson, simply by learning about sportsmanship. That money is hurting now coaches and parents because it’s coming out of their pockets. Which is not right, have them take the classes and leave it as that.
I believe and feel that the 2 basketball teams have to pay the money for what they did. They were acting so disrespectful in what they did. The teams come here to play the game and to play it right. The High School teams should be canceled until they know how to play the game without these animosities that they do in the game. If you can't be a team with good sportsmanship than don't play simple as that. The fee is a good price to pay for the things and crimes they did and have them all learn there lesson.
I believe the punishment for both team is not fair. This isn't the first incident and it won't be the last. I believe it wasn't fair for them to take everything away from them. I mean yeah its wrong but not to the point take everything away from the teams. I believe the consequences should been suspension. Sports man ship is something you need to have in any sport you play. The classes are good but for you to pay is unnecessary and too much. They should see what happens after the classes if they learned or not.
I do not think that mascots of Native Americans should be banned from professional sports. If anything I think that having Native American mascots helps Americans remember the history of our country. Personally if I were Native American I would be happy that a professional sports team is representing my race. I understand if Native Americans are affended but they also need to see the goods that come out of it. It is not like sports teams are poking fun at them, instead they are inspired by Native Americans and inspire their fans also. I believe that sports teams have huge respect for Native Americans that is why they chose them as their mascot.
I do not think that the punishment was fair all except for the teaching and modeling behavior classes that the coaches have to take and the sportsmanship classes that the players have to take before they play their next game. If I were giving the punishment I would just schedule it another day and for them to put different players on the court. They had to pay $500 each for forfeiting and they were charged an additional $500 for each of there games that they could not play due to the fight. I think it was to much done to the team and they shouldn't have gone that far with the punishment.
ReplyDeleteI think the punishment that both teams received was fair but I do not agree to the fact that they had to pay a $500 fee to forfeit the game.
ReplyDeleteI also disagree with the fact that there was a $500 fee for all away games. I Dont think that it was wise and Dont understand what point they were trying to bring across the coaches and players.
DeleteI agree with this because there punishment was right and should not be paid with alot of money like that. In my opinion I rather have them just forfeit.
DeleteI completely agree that both teams deserved to be kicked out and not being able to play the rest of the season.
ReplyDeleteI agree with your opinion that both teams deserved to be kicked out. I disagree with your opinion on the fee per game being too little though because the teams are being charged $500 for each road game.
DeleteI agree with with this because they need to learn what they did. They have to acknowledge the fact the things they messed up on all together.
DeleteI feel that the boys should not get charged and I have to pay.
ReplyDeleteI believe and feel that the 2 basketball teams have to pay the money for what they did.
ReplyDeleteI believe the punishment for both team is not fair.
ReplyDeleteI do not think that mascots of Native Americans should be banned from professional sports.
