Write a
Letter to the Editor that would appear in a local or national newspaper arguing
a specific point in sports that needs to be changed. Think of some current
events and issues about which you feel strongly. It could be a letter talking
about students transferring schools for athletic reasons, steroids, time away from
school, or sports taking on too big a role in schools. Parental roles,
sportsmanship, officiating, may also be possible topics. Don't let me limit
you, however. Limit your letter to 150 words, so get to the point and have some
fun.
Dear Editor,
ReplyDeleteA lot of things are happening in sports right now that should be changed. The first thing I strongly disagree with is the case of Adrian Peterson and the fact that he is frowned upon by the public for showing his child discipline, or what everyone else is saying "beating" his child. Children need discipline, they cant just never be disciplined and let them go on with what they are doing. These will make children into adults with no state of mind. Everybody has had a whooping before by their parents, its literally a way of life for most people, that's why they learn from what they did wrong. So AP should not be frowned upon what he did to his child which I think was a perfectly fine thing to do. Another one is officiating, sports have got softer these past few years because refs are blowing whistles and throwing flags on some stuff that should be just played. Everybody on the field is competing their heart out and your just making the game less fun with all the penalties. Lay off the penalties.
Dear Editor,
ReplyDeleteI believe that there are a lot of corrupt and immoral events happening in high school, college, and even elementary sports. One of the main problems I see is parents pushing their children to hard to play sports that some of them do not want to play or do not even like. They are forced to play a certain sport because parents want them to get themselves out there or see their ability or even to try to earn a scholarship. But i believe students should not be forced into something they do not wanna do or do not have talent in and focus on something they are good at.
Another problem is NFL players not getting enough discipline that they should. The case of Ray Rice deserves a lot more punishment then what he got. He hit his wife in an elevator and was only suspended for 3 games. I do not believe it is right for professional athletes to get of easier than any one else would. He should of been kicked of the NFL for those action.
Sincerely, Brandon Wilson
Dear Editor,
ReplyDeleteI believe that there are many corrupt and inappropriate things going around in high school sports. Sports in many schools are taking a big role students are playing with bad grades and the teachers are letting it happen. Also Coaches are taking sports way to seriously and telling there players to hurt other players on the other team so they have a better chance of winning or making them stay at practice longer to practice more and not giving them time for homework.
When students play sports with bad grades its just not right and it makes the school look bad to fix this the school can offer extra help to the student athletes that are failing to help bring there grades up. When coaches make players stay longer in practice or after practice and the students have no time for homework then they have bad grades which also means they cant play so if they shorten practice or add a Saturday practice then the kids have more time for homework and also eliminates the chance the kids will have bad grades. I believe if the schools just try to fix these issues it will benefit everyone from the athletes to the school
Sincerely, Bart Szuba

ReplyDeleteDear Editor,
ReplyDeleteMany things go on in sports that should be fixed, in my opinion when a player uses steroids, they should be banned from the league, not just suspended. Weather the use of steroids is through needle or pills you should be banned form the league and never to play that sport again.
Steroids are not only illegal but they are bad for you. If you take steroids you are just cheating yourself. It just means that you are giving up on yourself and taking the easy way out while everyone else is busting their tail of working hard for what they want to achieve. It makes the person taking steroids look like a punk. One example is when Hedo Turkoglu took steroids in the NBA and they only suspended him for a couple of months, to me, that should be his whole career. You are making yourself physically stronger so other players can't compete against you, that's very unfair, and wrong. People have different opinions about what they think about steroids, but me personally if you do take steroids, you should be banned form the league and never play again.
Sincerely, Mahmoud Abdelhalim

ReplyDeleteDear Editor,
ReplyDeleteThere are many things that happen in school sports that are taken to an extent. Whether it is the illegal use of steroids, parental control, sportsmanship; all these things can be changed for the bettering of school sports.
Every sport has their own competition. Whether it is expressed in a positive or negative way, it can play a huge factor when it comes to sports. Every team has to have great sportsmanship. When competitiveness comes in the way of teams, sportsmanship is usually destroyed and takes time to put back together. At a high school level, competition plays a huge factor in sports, but distributing it in a negative way can break teams down. Coming from experience, there was a lot of competition for a position on a team. Someone didn’t like the fact that their spot had been taken from someone else and would show poor sportsmanship any chance they could. This is probably one of the easiest things to fix on a team but takes time to actually be fixed. Sportsmanship should always be a main priority in sports and negative competition should not be allowed.

Dear Editor,
ReplyDeleteSports, lets face it, is what run the world. We hear and see advertisement almost everyday whether it is news on who is playing against Reavis this friday or the professional football game on sunday. Sports are always being talked about. With sports comes a team, a team is a family that understands and feels each others pain, but unfortunately sometimes when competition is tough a team competes against each other. This is when hate and jealousy creates. In order to be a strong competitive team, the team members have to equal themselves out with everyone else. They have to know that no one is better than anyone else on the team, they must work together, put positive thoughts into each others mind and work together in defeating the other teams. When this happens, a team is undefeated, the teams starts to believe in each other and their greatness and pack together because they do not think selfishly, they know the only way they can win is by team work, no individual work allowed. This is what needs to be practiced, no more saying "hey what is wrong with you today? This and this person has been beating you... you should be better than them", teams members must push together from start to finish.
Sincerely,

Dear Editor,
ReplyDeleteSports has taken a huge role in modern day lives of people and the way I see it, it needs to take a chill pill on high school students. Alot of students are doing more than one sport and that can mess with their education and it can also have a long term affect if they receive an injury.Sports might be therapeutic for some of the student athletes but most of the time it can make them more aggressive. Teams from other schools will play each other then it can cause rivalry between schools and can lead to outside of sports and personal problems. In some sports, the competitors hurt each other and the referee will not notice o call it, and some players are just aggressive because they might be taking illegal substances. Players and teenagers should not take illegal substances and therefore be banned from entering sports.Lastly, some team members are out to get each other because they might mess up by accident during the game and hen that guy gets picked on, your a team so work together. Instead of criticizing the kid, help him get better!

Dear Editor,
ReplyDeleteI believe there are some things in sports that are handled the wrong way, whether being too lenient or too harsh. Some examples are steroids, sportsmanship, and officiating. I believe each of them should be altered just a bit for the better of the teams.
I strongly believe that schools should not penalize athletes or students for what they post on their social media sites. It is their profile for a reason and I believe that should be respected. Unless of course it is completely inappropriate and offends multiple people.
Also, I believe in each sport, there should be a greater penalty right away when someone shows poor sportsmanship. Athletes have to remember that when they're on the field or court or wherever, whatever they're doing, they're representing their school. They need to do so in an appropriate manner. At the first site of poor sportsmanship, athletes should receive a greater penalty.
Sincerely,
Maryssa Meskill
Dear Editor,
ReplyDeleteSports play an important role in todays society. All kids do is play sports: soccer, basketball, football, etc. These children look up to professional athletes and see them as role models. There are numerous times where professional athletes resort to steroids or other drugs to influence the outcome of their sport. Any athlete should never turn to drugs for improvement for sports. That causes children to think that is all right and I think if an athlete uses steroids that it is pathetic. If the athlete need to use steroids to be good at that sport then he/she should obviously not play that sport. The amount of drugs athletes use should be reduced to zero.
I also believe that sports in high school should be less important than education. More than likely a high school athlete is not going to become professional so why prioritize sports over education. Some schools emphasize sports more than education so that needs to be changed.
Sincerely, Dariusz Pajor
Dear Editor,
ReplyDeleteThere are many things going on in sports today. I believe that some rules are not right. First is that I dont think athletes should get suspended for doing a crime. I think they should only get fined because why do they have to get suspended for doing a crime that they choice to do. Also, it could really effect a team because it could happen in a playoff game or a championship game. Next is that everyone needs to have good sportsmanship. If someone says an inappropriate comment I think they should get kicked out the game and also it keeps away violence and trash talking. The last thing I believe should be changed is that if you use steriods you should banned from playing that sport. Cheating should not be aloud in sports because the competition has to be even. I believe that those rules should be added immediately
Sincerely,

Dear Editor,
ReplyDeleteSports play a major rule in schools and it interferes with the students grades causing them to do bad in school. Coaches, noticing the students are doing bad but are more worried about winning. Sports are a big role for students in high school and they take too much time away from education.
When students play sports in school it takes time away from doing homework or studying for a test. This causes the student to fail the class and makes them ineligible to play that sport causing the school to look because their players are failing. Sports in high school was no longer about having fun but more about winning. Its more competitive for the coaches to get that win then it is for the students playing. Fixing these problems, like shortening practice will help students get caught up with school work and will increase the chances of high school students to play in sports.
Sincerely,
Omar Altabakhi
Dear Editor,
ReplyDeleteSpreading across nations, have been cases involving the use of illegal drugs in sports. I believe that using illegal drugs like steroids by an athlete is unacceptable. If an athlete really wanted to improve and beat an opponent, they should do it naturally and not by cheating. Also, the fact that a drug like steroids is in fact "illegal" is another reason why athletes should stay away from drugs. There should be harsher punishments on athletes who intake illegal drugs as stimulants to improve, in any way, shape, or form. As professional athletes become more popular in his/her sport, they are looked as role models for young athletes. If that professional athlete starts using illegal drugs to improve their performance, a younger athlete can follow into their foot steps and fall down the wrong path. To reduce the use of illegal drugs like steroids in sports, random and frequent drug tests should be given to professional athletes.

Dear Editor,
ReplyDeleteSports in high school and college are very corrupt. Most of the time kids don't play the sports they are interested in or that they want too, because their parents are forcing them to play a sport they want. Even if the child doesn't like that sport they are forced to play. A child won't get any fun out of the sport if the parents are the ones making them play, they have to want to play. Let the kid pick a sport he likes, and let them pursue their dreams, not their parents.
The NFL is also very corrupt, they think they can do whatever they want just because their name is so big in our society. They are making rules up as they go along and not following their old ones. Some players get smaller consequences then others but did something much worse. I feel like the NFL should be more monitored so they will stop making bad calls.
Sincerely,

Dear Editor,
ReplyDeleteIn modern day sports and maybe even in sports before my lifetime I strongly believe that some parents push their kids to play sports and make them do things they do not want to do. Sports are supposed to be fun.
As kids start to enjoy sports especially when their little and their parents become psycho about play time and how good their kid is, I believe all those factors start to make their child hate the sport. And also start to hate their parents.
I believe that parents need to start looking at what their child likes to do and push them to do the best they can, without pushing them to hate the sport. Adults can usually tell when they are pushing someone to a breaking point and the parents need to stop before they get too close to that line. Otherwise in generations to come people are going to look at sports as a job instead of fun, as it should be.
Sincerely,
Hope Stepuncik
Dear Editor,
ReplyDeleteRecently I have realized that student-athletes have been putting a little more emphasis on the athlete part rather then the student part. These children are not taking their schooling as serious as they should be. Many of them are barely getting by with what they need to be able to participate in their sports.
I believe that academics are more important then a sports team. There is very little percent of people that are able to earn a living off of plaing sports, so I don't believe that young children should be putting all of their effort into some of these things and barely putting anything into their academics. These students should be planning for their futures and thinking of maybe a career they may want to pursue in the future. Now I am not saying that sports are not important because I do also believe that they can teach people great things, like respect and competition, but I think they should be taking their academics more seriously.
I think that some things should be done to help assure that these students are doing their school work and not just getting by but, doing enough to where they are actually getting something's out of it.
Sincerely,
Alexis Kasper
Dear Editor,
ReplyDeleteThere are alot of things going on in sports today that should be overviewed. First off is the officials, they dont even let the kids play the game "Penalty, Penalty, Penalty!" they man let us play the game its football. and as for other sports too petty things as faking a fall and having a foul called on that is just stupidity to me. If a player wants to flop and plop around he should be "flopped" on to the bench and let some real players play.
Another thing that I dont quite get sometimes is the education. "Education is key" and yet some kids barely make it through school without failing the whole day. I think we should understand and make our players understand that you can go and be the next sport prodigy, but without some form of higher education you wont have anything to fall on.
About parents forcing their children to be play in a sport, I believe if a child doesn't like one sport try another or another I think he/she will find one that they will fall in love with or be good at. And even if she/he doesn't like sports involve them in a club or something to keep them busy and out of trouble.
Sincerely,
Diondre Roberts
