Historical Fiction Reflection
In 100 words or more, reflect on your experience researching and writing historical fiction. The following are SOME of the questions/topics you might want to consider in your reflection: What did you enjoy doing? What did you not like about the experience? Describe any interesting facts/details you learned while researching. Would you have preferred to write a typical research paper instead? Why?

The thing I enjoy most about doing the paper was to create my own story and make my character come alive. The reason why it was my favorite thing to do because the story I created it was from my mind. When I write papers for an English class there were all story we could make or in real life situations. I got the opportunity to make a character come to life and make him one of the biggest rookie of all time. Plus when I was making that story my though of creating it and making it come alive, I though it really happened. Some of the stuff did but, not all. That's why that was my favorite part of doing this paper.
ReplyDeleteFrom my experience writing this historical fiction short story, i liked and disliked many aspects of this assignment. I enjoyed writing my story on historical fiction due to the fact that it was based on a historical event in Chicago and an event that I actually attended. I learned how to write a short story first, but secondly, I learned how to utilize dialouge and endnotes in my paper. Before writing this paper, i never knew how to do the many things i can do now. What I disliked about the experience is that it had to include atleast 9-10 historical events in a short 5 page research paper. I feel like this just cramms the reader with information and they dont get a good understanding on the actual history of the event. The endnotes are supposed to support this but the endnotes are too short to know much about that event or topic. In an actual 200+ page book, you get to know much about the storyline and whatever it has to offer. I would have preffered to write a typical research paper because you can get a better understanding on what actually happened and keep that knowledge with you as you read. In research papers, its about many or just one single event which makes it a better choice for me and your readers.
ReplyDeleteMy experience researching information for the historical fiction story was good and bad a times. For our 6 research sheets we had to do on our year, for me personally i did not use all or much of those i only ended up using like 3 and then researching more for my story about things i needed. I enjoyed writing the story it was fun coming up with ideas and scenes we can do. I actually learned allot about my year 1927. Some things in 1927 i knew like Babe Ruth's 60 home runs but i learned more like who they played in the world series and that they swept the pirates in four games. I would have preferred writing a typical research paper because then i believe more of the class could have done better because they would not have to worry about it being in 1st person. I also think if it was a regular research paper we would have learned allot more about history and sports rather than in the stories we learned more about the history of sports in our year then world or national news.
ReplyDeleteI think it was really fun and it wasnt to hard. i enjoyed doing alot of things but i mostly enjoyed doing the sources those were relly easy and fun. It made for easy points. The only thing i didnt really like about this experience is that it was kinda complicated to figure out what to do at some points of the story. I iddnt know what to write at some points and it made it kinda hard for me, but other than that is was not to bad. i liked writing this paper and it was fun i would of rather written this papper than any other peper because it would have been harder with a diffrent topic. I also like football so it made it easier to write.
ReplyDeleteThis was one of the few writing assignments that I actually enjoyed. The creativity that came with this assignment was something that I really enjoyed. If it was just a research paper I think that we be very boring, I got to express my creativity in the assignment. I didn’t like the fact that I felt as though I shouldn’t write like ten pages, because I felt like in order to have a good rising action and climax I would need to go in depth and be very descriptive. I planned on writing a lot more but since it was getting lengthy I had to cut out a lot of stuff which limited my creativity. So I didn’t like the fact that my creativity was limited in that way.

ReplyDeleteWhen choosing what year did I want to research for the historical fiction project, I was excited because I was going to be able to research topics on sports of the year I wanted. Only thing I knew of the year 1985 was that the Chicago Bears whooped on New England in the super bowl. I enjoyed the freedom we had on this project, how we could make up any story you wanted to write, and it would have to be sports related. For myself I love sports so it was a nice project. The only thing I could say I didn't like were the requirements for this paper. 3-5 pages was a good amount for writing the paper. The end notes and the citation page I did not like because it was all up tight and had to be in a certain way. It was very annoying. But overall it was good project!
ReplyDeleteWhat I like enjoy doing was writing my own story. I liked the fact that I wrote it and no one else that I could use my mind and put in things I like our own imagination. What I didn't like was you needed to make end notes and the work consulted page. Well everything I research I didn't know about and it was nice researching and getting to know more about the past and about a specific year and not general so we can know about it more. I would prefer a typical research paper because I think it would be easier and less of the teacher asking for us. Also, the timing and when it would be due I think it would take less 4-5 days instead of a week or two.
ReplyDeleteWriting this historical story was very stressful but some what fun and different. I never wrote a story in my life nor did I ever add endnotes and works consulted to it. I enjoyed the fact that i can write about anything and make it your own story and just have fun with it. It was new learning experience that helped my mind expand more. I did not like that it took me so long to even write the whole thing and I disliked the endnotes and works consulted alot. I feel like that made me more stressful and made me have more pressure to have all these things perfect. I learned about many places in Chicago that I never knew existed like Cabrini Green. An ex housing projects by Lincoln Park. And no this is a fun and way better way to write a research paper. The other way is typical old and boring.
ReplyDeleteI thought the historical fiction research was a good paper to write about. Especially, if it was about sports and that is always a interesting topic to talk about. I learned a couple of new things while doing this paper. I learned how the terrorist in the Boston Marathon almost tried to escape but 1 died and the other got caught in a boat. I dont like how we had to do the end notes because I really didn't understand how to do that. So overall i thought this research paper was a good idea it was a difficult paper to write but its good for the future
ReplyDeleteThe research paper in my opinion was pretty simple. I enjoyed being able to create my own character and make up his own story. Writing a paper about someone who actually exists would be a lot harder due to the fact that you have to research every detail about the person. It was fun giving my character his own personality and his own traits. I believe that student should create their character and plan their story before they start the research though. Once I finished the research papers for my year and started writing my story I realized that half of it was irrelevant and I had to go back onto the internet to find sources that were relevant to my story and my characters personality. I also found it hard to weave some of the sources into the paper. Some of them fit right in but with some I struggled and had to change up the whole plot of my story. I did though learn a lot about my year doing research. I learned that the Lakers were located in Minneapolis in 1953 and not in L.A were they play today. I also leaned how differently the game was played at that time than it is now. Watching the video of the 1953 playoff game was probably the highlight of my research. It gave a visual on exactly what the players were like and how the game was played. I believe writing a historical fiction research paper it a lot more fun and creative than just a normal research paper. I also liked how we wrote from 1st person.
ReplyDeleteI really liked doing the historical fiction research paper. I liked it because I felt that we had more freedom. It was way more fun and interesting to write a historical fiction paper, than to write a normal research paper. Since my main focus was about the Blackhawks, I really liked doing research on them, I found out many things that I had not known. Something that I didn’t like about this experience is that some of the articles I chose could not really be easily blended into the story, but that doesn’t have anything to do with the paper itself, but with what I had chosen. I thought it was interesting that before 2010, the last time that the Blackhawks had won the Stanley Cup was in 1961. Also, it was really interesting that Marian Hossa is the first player to make it to the playoffs in three consecutive years with three different teams.
ReplyDeleteThe research paper we did was fun. I learned things about some of the people I researched that I didn't know from before. I enjoyed doing the actual research on the person I chose to research. It was fun to read about the things that happened in the year that I picked. I didn't like doing the source citation. I learned that Mike Tyson was accused of rape. It was a big surprise when I seen the article about it. I liked doing the research paper it was fun to go back in time and learn new things.
ReplyDeleteI think that writing historical fiction was way more enjoyable than writing a typical research paper. Writing the historical fiction story we had more freedom and were able to be more creative. I really liked that throughout the whole project we were very organized and did everything step by step. We were provided examples of everything we had to do and did everything systematically. In doing the historical fiction we also had a broader spectrum of what we can research. We didn't have to only write about one specific event but we could incorporate different events that happened during the year that we chose.
ReplyDeleteThis was the first time I had done a historical fiction writing assignment. Overall I thought it was pretty enjoyable to make up my own story and weave it into a time in history. The thing I didn’t really like was the 3 - 5 page requirement. I think it’s hard to write a decent story in 5 pages with double spacing and dialogue. I would probably be able to write 10+ pages with that format with all the details I wanted to use. I still wrote 8 pages but I had to cut down on certain details or pass time in my story. That is the only complaint I had with this assignment. Overall I enjoyed this a lot better than a typical research paper.
ReplyDeleteMy experience while researching and writing this historical fiction paper was stressful in a way but it was also cool. I found out a lot of things about people, conflicts at the time, sports, and disasters. The thing I did not like about this experience was the amount of research we had to find and how difficult it was to find information that was accurate and usable. Another problem I had was building a story out of my mind, I did it and it came out decent but I believe if there was more time and I had better information my story would have sound like a movie. I would not have preferred a typical research paper though because while making this story, it got me in a zone of peace and I felt relaxed and focused at the same time.
ReplyDeleteOne of the most difficult things about this assignment was the page restriction. I had so many ideas flowing but we were limited to 3-5 pages. It was difficult having to take out certain things that I wanted to include in my story. The research was easy. It became difficult trying to incorporate a fictional story into historical events. I think if there was no page limit, my story would have better character development and a more intriguing conflict. Either way, I enjoyed learning things about a different era. At the end of the day, a research paper would've taken less work, but it would've been really boring.
ReplyDeleteWriting research papers usually isn't on the top anyone's list of favorite things to do, but I really do think that the fact that it was a story made it a better experience. We were able to, in a way, feel like a part of history with the way we wrote our papers. I really did enjoy the writing process and creating my own historical character. The little snippets history make the paper come to life. I would most definitely not prefer to write a regular research paper - they are too dull and over done. This story was a nice change to the usual research paper.
ReplyDeleteWhat I liked about writing the research paper is that we got to write a story along with doing the research. I also enjoyed being able to make my own character from that time period. It was like I sort of got to rewrite history. The end notes requirement was a bit too high for the amount of pages that were assigned. I found it difficult to try to fit all of them in in that small amount of pages, but I figured it out. This research paper helped me learn about many things from my year, in and interesting way, that I wouldn't have ever known otherwise.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion it was a great idea to write a historical friction paper. I learned a lot about my year and also I learned something about different years that other people had. Also writing a sources helped me a lot when I was writing my paper. I really like that we could choose any sport we wanted to not just one kind of sport. I didn't like a fact that it took me a long time to write this paper. One of the interesting fact about my year was that the world is going to end on December 21 but it didn't happen. In conclusion, I would rather prefer writing this kind of paper that just typical research paper because in my opinion is more interesting and you can learn more.
ReplyDeleteDuring this project I learned things about the year 1995 that is never knew. This paper was easy to get information and research for but I did not really like the having to do a fiction story. If it were a research paper i would have been finished with it faster and not have been as stressful. I enjoyed doing research because it was easy I learned a lot of things i didn't before. Like i never knew that there was a bombing in Oklahoma. So i enjoyed the research part but not doing a historical fiction story.
