Sports Hero

Describe your favorite player or your sport hero and why he/she is your hero. What qualities or skills does he/she possess that leads you to admire them so much. Writer John Tunis once said, "The heroes in my books are the losers." Do your heroes always have to win or have you learned something from them when they have not been successful? Is your sport hero that because of their athletic prowess, successes, and skills or are they heroic because of the values they show, their ability to overcome challenges, or their determination against the odds. Talk about your sport hero in detail.

  1. My sports hero is Michael Jordan. He was a Hall of Fame basketball player who played on the Chicago Bulls. He won 6 rings for the Bulls and 2 back to back to back championships. Michael Jordan is my sports hero because he won numerous championships for the city that I was born in. Also, he is my favorite sports hero because he was a great competitor and he played through a sickness with is a tough thing to do. He also hit big shots in big time moments. I think many people from Chicago favorite sport hero is Michael Jordan because of the things he did for Chicago Bulls, the fans and the organization.

  2. I believe that my favorite sports figure is Mark Buehrle for the Chicago White Sox. This skills that he possesses is motivation and determination. He was very motivated and determind on July 23, 2009 when he pitched a perfect game at US Cellular field. He had alot of stress and determination to make what has only happened 18 times in MLB history. My figure doesnt always have to win but always have to give 100% effort. He was well prepared when he started the game. In comparison to me, i am well determined and motivated to finish high school with a good gpa and focus on my job as well. School and my job is almost like having 2 jobs. This is why i need determination and motivation to keep me afloat and be successful.

  3. I would have to say my favorite sports player is Michael Jordan. I saw this because he played for Chicago and that's the city I was born in. Everyone around here and in the US know who he is. He has won numerous rings, 6 to be exact playing for the Bulls. He was a very competitive player and didn't let anything stop him from playing. He even played during a sickness. That shows dedication and that's exactly what I like to see in a good sports player. They have to be able to not care what people say and continue to strive for that one goal they have in their minds, whatever it might be they need to try and achieve it no matter what anybody says.

  4. My sports hero is Derrick Rose i admire him so much for many reasons. For starters he plays for my favorite team the Chicago Bulls, he is also one of the best players not only on the bulls but in the NBA. He is also my sports hero because he has overcome many challenges he torn his ACL, not once but twice and now he is back and he is playing well in preseason and he did good in the FIBA tournament. He also had to overcome many challenges, he grew up in Chicago so just that was a challenge because he grew up in a rouge neighborhood. This is why Derrick Rose is my sports hero not only for his tallent on the court but for his toughness through hard times.

  5. My favorite player and sports hero is LeBron James. LeBron is my sports hero is because of the leadership he shows on and of the court. When he plays he makes his whole team better not just one player. The qualities LeBron possess is that he doesn't like losing, he only likes to win. Also, like I said he is a leader, and he makes everyone around him better. LeBron James doesn't always have to win, when he lost in the 2011 NBA finals he was upset, but he worked hard in the off season got himself and his team better and won the NBA championship the next year. LeBron doesn't walk around a challenge he likes to shine when it gets tough, he guards the other teams best player when he has to, doesn't get down on a teammate when they do something wrong, he just helps them improve and learn from their mistake. LeBron James is my sports hero for all of those reasons, his determination to win is what I really like about him and the way he plays basketball.

  6. Everyone has a hero in their lives, our parents might be a perfect example of that. Another example of a hero could also be a sports figure. My hero is Steve Prefontaine. Prefontaine is an all american runner, he has broken records that still have not been broken to this day. Prefontaine is known for his ability to run, his ability to run with his heart and strong mind. Running is a type of sport where you are your own competition, Prefontaine definitely did not let his tired legs give up until he crossed that finish line, he pushed through everything like it was the last race of his life. This is why he inspires me. Unfortunately he passed away which was one of the most tragic days in the 70's. Many had so much respect for him. This made me realize that running is not forever, you have to take the chances you have because one day, in a blink of an eye, everything can be gone. Prefontaine did not always get first place, there were races that he came in second through fourth but he never let his mind tell him someone else is better than him. He was always up for a challenge against the top runners in the world. Prefontaine is my hero not because of all the first place finishes he got but because he was never scared of a challenge, you have to run against the best to do your best and you cannot be intimidated.

  7. I would have to say that my sports hero is Jennie Finch. She has been my idol ever since I was a little girl. I remember when I first started playing, I wanted all my equipment Jennie Finch, most likely because she was the only softball player at the time with a pink line out. To me she is an awesome woman, and athlete. Even though now she is retired from playing she still travels the world and teaches sports camps to girls of all ages. I love Jennie because of her talent and because of her love for the game. Also I love how she still tries to be herself. She doesn't try to be a rich stuck up kind of athlete and maybe that's because Professional athletes for softball don't make enough money but I think that's just not in her personality. I also admire how Jennie had an unexpected pregnancy and took the season off, but then came back to play the next season and as a pitcher had worked extremely hard to loose the baby weight and keep up all her pitches. She is a very down to earth person and is my sports hero because of how she doesn't act like she's the best at what she does even though she in my eyes is a spectacular player.

  8. My favorite player is on the Detroit Lions and that is Ndamukong Suh. He is a very competitive player. People always talk crap about him saying he is a dirty player but he's not always a dirty player. I've learned many things when Suh is not successful. He might resort to dirty plays but that just shows me he's trying to take a short cut and not trying to play to his fullest. I've always liked Suh and watching his games when he was in college and the NFL. Watching his plays makes me want to be like him. He is a monster and he gets through the line. I'm a defensive tackle just like he is that's also why he is also my favorite football player.

  9. My Sports Hero is Alex Rodriguez. When he first started out playing for the big leagues he was a tremendous baseball player, but when I watched him play on TV for the NY Yankees he was a amazing third baseman. I’ll never forget when I got the see him lay against the White Sox and also got his autograph on my Alex Rodriguez mit I had and i still have to this day put away. After I found out he used steroids I was upset and questioned why he used drugs to cheat and ruin his career. No matter what that day when I got his autograph I will never forget it because he was my sports hero and a great ball player.

  10. My sports hero is Pat Tillman, he was an star safety for the Arizona Cardinals in 2002 but left his team and a 3.6 million contract to go to the Army. After the 9/11 attack, he decided that to fight in the war was better than playing football which shows patriotism. He lost his life in action in 2004 due to a controversial incident which was led to believe that he died due to friendly fire. He showed that winning and playing football wasn't everything and showed sacrifice to go to war and sadly lose is life.

  11. My sports hero is Jesse Owens an Track and Field Olympic champion. Jesse Owens is my favorite player because he was an dominant runner in not one but 4 events 100m, 200m, Long Jump, AND 4x100m. I'm also an track and field runner and he is inspirational because he was undermined and destroyed his competition and I when people sleep on my abilities I think like him and just do me. He is a accomplishment to the black race and did great things and I admire that.

  12. I don't have a specific sports hero, however I have a few players that I admire and look up to. One of the players that I look up to and have a lot of respect for is the Dallas Stars’ forward, Rich Peverley. In March of 2014, Rich Peverley came off the ice and he immediately collapsed. He had a heart condition which he knew about. Peverley collapsed but was still conscious and talking, he needed medical attention right away. Even after collapsing, he asked to go back into the game. I admire him for his determination; he put the game and his team before his own health. To me, the heroes do not always have to win. I’ve learned from him that although you may want to do well for your team and play, if your body is telling you that you need to stop, you should listen to your body. I look up to Rich Peverley because of the values he shows, his determination, and his ability to overcome challenges.

  13. My favorite player is Richard Sherman the All-Pro cornerback who plays for the Seattle Seahawks. He has great leadership and commitment to his game. He has love for his teammates and he is very outspoken. He has confidence and thats why I like him. He does not always need to win to be my hero because he has been through alot in his life and he was a low draft pick to a All pro superbowl champion corner back and his career is far from over. I have a lot of respect for him and thats why hes my hero

  14. James Rodriguez is one my favorite players. He is a young star coming up from Columbia. And he is sure coming up, I think. He is young, with lots of skills and things to look at. He in 2014 world cup, he played with his home team Columbia and many people thought they would make it to the finals or even close with the team they had. He and his team surprised the world for going that far in the cup. Losing and not making it but like he told the news reporter he was happy and proud for what they have done and how far they went. He push this team far, him being the only good good player on team and being the team leader, he carried the team he told them and lifted them to dreams now that now they are a teamed to be feared and not noticed. And for a young guy to do that I admire his courage and heart to do what he does best and love which is play soccer and become one of the best players in the world.

  15. Novak Djokovic is a Serbian tennis player, currently ranked #1 in the world. He is humorous, hard working, and a champion. He has won 7 Grand Slams, three in the year 2011. In the early years of his career though he was not liked for his antics on the court. He would often yell and beat himself up for making mistakes and fans often booed him. He made a change though and is now loved by many. He gives to charities often and participates in many charity matches. Djokovic doesn't constantly win and he doesn't have to for me to look up to him. I learn a lot from watching him lose because of his reactions to the loss. Now he gives credit to his opponent and he learn from his losses just like i do. Djokovic is my hero both because of his athletic superiority and values.

  16. My sports hero would probably be Michael Jordan. He played for the Chicago Bulls and was an all around great player. He was always determined to win and never let
Loosing discourage him. He won mang championships and was never cocky. Some players get to cocks when they win all the the time but Michael always kept the same personalitity. He had enough skill to
win a championship by himself, but he we was a team player and would never hog the ball. He also was a great defensive player and not to many people give him credit for that. That's why I would have to say he is my sports hero.

  17. My favorite sports hero is Jackie Robinson because he was the first African American to play MLB and he broke the baseball color line when he started for the Dodgers playing first base. He was a brave player because he knew the risks of playing baseball and he still went out and did what he loved. Jackie Robinson has won Rookie of the Year, MVP, and a World Series Championship. Heroes don't always have to win, like Robinson he showed that if you want to do something you love do it no matter what others think. Robinson is my hero because of his dedication and his courage to play baseball no matter what others said about him.

  18. Not only is Destinee Hooker a very good-looking person, she is probably one of the top players I mainly look up to for volleyball. Destinee Hooker was off for some time due to her being pregnant with her wonderful daughter, but that did not stop her from being the dominant player she always was. She was the second female in NCAA history to win three NCAA Outdoor High Jump titles and the first female high jumper to sweep the indoor and outdoor crowns since 2004. The reason I look up to her so much is because every time I see her playing, her attitude and intensity on the court inspires me to do what everything she does. I mean come on; she was off for a year because of her baby but still played phenomenal when she came back! She will always be an inspiration for me in volleyball.

  19. My sports hero is the best tennis player ever, Roger Federer. He has 17 grand slam titles, and 81 overall professional tournament titles. I admire him because of the class he has when he plays. He almost never shows aggravation when he plays. I really admire that quality of him, it’s as if he never gets mad at errors he makes. I also admire his tennis skill. It’s almost flawless. But now, new and young players are starting to overthrow Federer such as Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic. Federer is my hero because of his amazing athletic skill and his ability to overcome almost any obstacle.

  20. I think my favorite sports player would have to be Jackie Robinson. Jackie was not only a great baseball player, but he was a main part in a movement that changed the way people look at the world today. I admire how courageous Robinson was when he played baseball, especially because of how racist people were of African Americans during that era. I most definitely do not think that to be a great player, you have to win all the time. Sometimes losing is more beneficial to players rather than winning because you learn your weaknesses and work hard to improve them. Jackie Robinson is my favorite player because of what kind of person he is, not how he plays the game of baseball.

  21. My favorite player and sport hero would probably have to be Lionel Messi. Despite only being 5'7 due to hormone deficiency that restricted his growth, Messi broke many records because of his speed and great attacking style. In 2012, Messi set a record for most goals in a calendar year, and afterward was named FIFA's "Player of the Year." He also became the first player to score five goals in a Champions League match and became Barcelona's all-time leading scorer. I believe that winning is defiantly not the most important thing and I think loosing trully shows a players personality. In my opinion, loosing can help a player learn from their mistakes to improve in their next match. I chose Lionel Messi as my sports hero because he not only has great athletic ability but he can also overcome any challenges that are in his path.

  22. My favorite player and my sports hero is Thierry Henry. Hailed by many as the greatest striker of the Premier League era in England, the Arsenal FC striker was the focal point of the team. The all time leading goalscorer for Arsenal he has won two Premier League titles (for one of which the team went through the season undefeated) and three FA Cups. His main attributes were his pace, power and technical ability. He was known not only for being a great goalsorer but also a scorer of great goals. Later in his career he moved to Barcelona and there won another two league titles and a Champions league trophy. He has also won the World Cup with France and picked up many individual awards except for the Ballon d'Or formerly known as the European Footballer of the Year. By many he is considered the greatest player to never win the Ballon d'Or. The trophies and his flair are not the only reasons why he is my favorite player. The most important reason why he is my favorite player is that although he was considered one of the best in the world, he always had his head on straight. He knew how to please the fans and to play for the name on the front of the shirt rather than the one on the back.

  23. My sport hero would be Courtney Mathewson. Mathewson is the captain of the USA women's national water polo team. To be quite honest, I look up to the whole team in general. Water polo has been proven to be the hardest sport in the Olympics, you must be very tough and fast. I would know because I have participated in the sport ever since third grade. In addition to rigorous year round training, they all completed college (most of them going to UCLA) and their majors. Mathewson gained a lot of respect after leading the Bruins to the undefeated season. She won the 2008 Peter J. Cutino Award, which is presented annually to the outstanding female and male collegiate water polo players in the United States. I strive to lead like she does one day, and also attend UCLA.

  24. My favorite soccer player and a sports hero is Lionel Messi. He plays for my favorite team Fc Barcelona. At the age of 21 Messi received a nomination to FIFA World Player of the Year award. A year after that he won that. At the age of 24 he became Barcelona's all-time score in all official club competitions. In September 2014, Messi scored his 400th senior career goal for club and country aged just 27. He worked hard gor his success. But on the other hand, sometimes he and his team losted a game. That gave them extra motivation and they trained even harder to win another game. I think Messi is a great player that work hard to be better and this is why he is my favorite sports hero.

  25. My favorite sports hero is Cristiano Ronaldo for Real Madrid C.F.. Cristiano Ronaldo broke many records and he get me motivated to keep trying. At the age of 15 he was diagnosed with a racing heart which almost made him end his soccer career. He didnt give up he kept doing what he loves and he keeps practicing to get better and better. He worked hard to get where he is now. On 17 October 2012, Ronaldo won his 100th cap for the Portugal national team in a World Cup qualification match. Even outside the soccer life he has a heart. Back in 2012 he sold a golden boot he won for 1.5 million euro and he took all of that money and donated it to fund schools in Gaza.

  26. My favorite sports hero would be Chicago Bulls PG Derrick Rose. Derrick Rose I look at because he is one of the most humblest players on and off the course. Already into his 7th season, he is playing like him old self once again. The youngest MVP ever in NBA history has faced a lot of adversity over these past few years due to sitting out after tearing his ACL in the first round of the playoffs in 2011. He re-entered the NBA after sitting out one season due to the injury. He came back and played 10 games to fall again to an MCL injury. He missed the rest of that season. I look to him with such greatness because everything he has been through. He is just striving to get better at what he does. He is a perfect example of a sports hero because he sets the right example on and off the court. Helping his community by giving back to where he came from.
