Do you agree with placing "Cut" in the unit titled "The Glory and Inspiration of Sports"? Explain why or why not and provide specific textual support to back up your claim.
Yes I agree with placing "Cut" with our unit because that theme is an important part of sports. In the story, most of the character don't make the team except the last character. He made the team but never played. Never playing probably gave him a reason to play harder and be better. An example is Michael Jordan, who didn't make his high school basketball team. After he was cut, he talked to his coach and his coach have him a chance. Now not making the high school team drove Michael to be one of the best all-time players of all. He's known all around, has shoes everywhere and have basketball players looking after him. Another good reason to put this story in the unit "The Glory and Inspiration of Sports" is because the glory of a great player comes a down part. Everyone has a down part in their career, and then sometimes they turn it in a better situation. Some characters in the story took not making the team, in a life changing event. That's not how it's supposed to be. Again, there's up and downs but these players kept their careers down and didn't try to bring it up.
No, I do not agree with placing "Cut" in the unit titled "The Glory and Inspiration of Sports." I do not agree because it showed how these people became successful but they did not become successful in sports. They used their memory of being cut as motivation. After they got cut they were all disappointed and sad that they did not make the team. These characters succeeding in other areas of life do not represent glory in sports. It shows the inspiration of sports because of the fact they got cut it inspired them to succeed in life. The reason I do not agree with the placement of "Cut" in this unit is because although it shows the inspiration of sports, it does not provide us with the glory that sports can bring to a person. If the story would have showed someone going on to the major leagues or winning a championship then I would think that this would be a perfect story to use in this unit. Regardless of my opinion of whether this story fits in this unit or not, I still think it was an interesting story and it shows how things that happen in a person's childhood can help motivate them to succeed later on in life.
Yes, I agree with placing "Cut" in our unit title because it got inspiration all in it. Guys who was excited to try out for a team but ended up getting cut didn't stop them for achieving more in life. Not everyone is going to make the team but that doesn't mean that you stop playing sports, try out for other sports and maybe you wouldn't get cut. The good thing that the men in the story did was use their failure as motivation, no they did not play other sports but they did become very successful in life and yes they still remember that day that they were once kids being cut from the team and 1 guy having a douche coach but that didn't stop him from being succeeding in life. Even professional players in remember getting cut when they were kids but they fed off that failure and started trying and they ended up in the big leagues for the sport they cut from back then or for a different sport. The thing is everyone will always remember those moments of something happening to them when they were young and not making a team for a sport. That'll stay with them for the rest of their life but also realize those words "you did not make the team" or " your not good enough" motivated them to succeed in life.
“I guess you make your mind up never to allow yourself to be hurt like that again. In some way I must have been saying to myself, ‘I’ll play the game better.’ Not the sports game, but anything i tried.” This, and many other quotes in the story “Cut” describes inspiration. To be inspired basically means to be influenced in a good way. Inspiration comes in many different forms, from many different people or many different situations. Everyone gets their inspiration from something different and after reading the story “Cut” we now also know inspiration does not always tie with a nice memory. I agree in a 100% that this story should be put in the unit about inspiration. We can clearly see how after all these people were cut from a team they did not give up. Their dreams were crushed but it didn’t make them stop working, infact it made them work even harder. It shows us that when the coach told them they weren’t good enough they made sure they better themselves so that no one ever tells them that ever again. Even though at the end of the day they were cut from the team, the “cut” prepared them for the real world, gave them the inspiration to work hard for everything and anything in life. In every story of this selection we see how the players were inspired by not being accepted on the team, and that also gives us- readers- inspiration because it shows us that it is O.K. to fail and bring yourself back up.
Yes I think the putting “Cut” in this unit is a good idea. Inspiration comes from not only good experiences, but also bad ones. We get inspired by our role models, or a good sports song or movie, or maybe when you win a medal you get inspired. What about when you lose, or don’t make the team? Some people can say that this isn’t the inspirational and glory part about sports but to me it is. You need to fail at something first to be successful at it. No one ever gets better by not trying and practicing. Getting cut when trying to make a team might be disappointing at first, but eventually you realize that you didn’t make it maybe because you weren’t quite as good. This inspires you to keep practicing, and to strive to be a better player. If your heart is in the sport, then you will be inspired by your own failures. Inspiration to be better, quicker, stronger is needed for success, and sometimes the motive is failure. So I think that placing this story in this unit shows inspiration for sports from two different views, inspiration from failure and from greatness.
I agree with the unit being titled "cut" because even though being cut its much of a glory, it can be very inspirational. For Bob Graham, being cut destroyed his life as a kid but it helped inspire him to never fail again. He even says "I found out, even though I couldn't articulate it at the time, that there would be times in my life when certain people would be in a position to say 'You're not good enough' to me. I did not want that to happen ever again." Without being cut it wouldn't have helped Bob strive for excellence later in his life. Maurice McGrath even says " I guess you make your mind up never to allow yourself to be hurt like that again." Sports aren't always about glory, sometimes its about the failures that lead to the inspiration to become the best which is followed up by the glory of achieving that.
I think it ties in with the unit just fine. The unit deals with getting through adversities to get to the glory. Cut is about many of kids that were inspired to never get cut from anything ever again, they were inspired by the time they were cut way back in little league. Bob stated “there would be times in my life when certain people would be in a position to say 'You're not good enough' to me. I did not want that to happen ever again.” The coaches list of kids that just weren’t good enough impacted Bob so deeply that from that day on he made sure he would never fail at anything again. It set a drive; a hunger for success; an ambition in him. There are some that are born ambitious and there are others that acquire it over time. The theme of the unit is inspiration in sports, and I cant think of anything more inspiring then a kid that makes something out of himself though he has had to go through multiple different adversities
I do agree on having "Cut" in the topic of "The Glory and Inspiration of Sports". It's a good idea to include "cut" because it has a lot to do with the glory and inspiration of sports. It plays a big part in inspiration of sports because a lot of people get cut but very few will go on and keep trying to be on the team. Being cut is a big inspiration because if you get cut then that should motivate you to keep on trying. And if you don't keep on trying then you're probably not meant for that sport anyway, because if you were that crazy to go out for the team how are you just going to give up on the sport after you get cut you should keep on trying to be on the team becuase thats the reason why you showed up in the first place. People who keep on trying after they got cut a lot of times usually end up being successful in that sport because they have a passion for it. People who keep on trying are the ones who say "If you want something, you should go and get it". They don't try and let anything bring them down especially being cut from a team. Instead of them feeling bad and wishing that they had never got cut, they suck it up, work hard, and learn from their losses and mistakes. Like how it says in the story" I know that for all of my life since that day, I have done more work than I had to be doing, taken more assignments than I had to be taking and putting in more hours". That's basically saying to not let it bring you down but inspire you to put in more work and time so that you can get what you want and not have to go through getting cut again.
I think that the title "Cut" should be in the inspirational section because in the story most of the characters were cut from the team because people didn't think they were good enough. This pushed them to become greater and work harder for their goals. They kept thinking back to being cut because that was a big part of their life at the time and it gave then the dedication to not give up and keep trying to be the best that they can be. In the end those players that were cut from the team ended up becoming successful because they didn't let one person tell them they can't do something. This doesn't just happen in sports, it happens in everything. Everyone knows about Michael Jordan being cut in high school then becoming one of the greatest basketball players in the world. Do you think he just gave up and listened to the people who doubted him? Hell no! He tried even harder and had more inspiration to becoming great! He dedicated his life to basketball and with all the practice and perseverance he became a pro. Also another story was about a kid who wasn't good in school, his teacher thought he was stupid and that he was slowing the rest of his class down in academics. He also got fired from every job he had. One day he wanted to invent something so he tried over and over but it failed over 1000 times but wasn't enough to stop him. And one day the lightbulb lit!
Putting “Cut” in the unit called “The Glory and Inspiration of Sports” was a good choice because being cut can inspire you to be better than you already are. There is nothing more eye opening than someone telling you that you are not good enough and nothing else will give you more drive to succeed, whether it be in sports or something else like the people in the short story. Think of Michael Jordan; he was cut from his high school varsity basketball team. He then later became the greatest basketball player of all time. He may have gained that drive from failure, from a cut. Who knows if he would be the greatest if an event like that happened? The story was also a bit inspiring because you can be inspired by how the people changed their lives. You look at what happened there and it helped the characters shape their lives and become who they are today. They were inspired to be the best person they can be by being cut. They responded to the challenge of being called not good enough and achieved success in other ways. After achieving success, they were able to reach glory, partly due to sports.
I think putting "Cut" in the unit "The Glory and Inspiration of Sports” was a good idea because it shows how athletes overcame the emotional stress of being cut from a team. Some of the athletes were scarred more then the other athletes. Maurice McGrath was told by his coach that he was "no good", others like Bob Graham were let down a little bit easier by seeing on the list that they did not make the team. Being cut from a team sometimes means being cut from other things. Friendships, memories, fun, etc. In high school it also means being cut from groups, which can influence your social life and your high school experience. Something inspirational in the article "Cut" is when Malcolm MacPherson tried out for the baseball team. His parents died in a car crash but yet he played very well during his first practice. He was a "clutch" player in the first game until he had to catch a pop up. After his mistake he was "off the squad". After that moment he told himself that he "would never again be told he wasn't good enough" By reading this article in "The Glory and Inspiration of Sports” other athletes will learn that they are not alone and that being cut does not mean the end to their career.
I think that "Cut" by Bob Green would be best suited in a different unit. "The Glory and Inspiration of Sports" unit should cover the successes OF SPORTS. Although each of the main characters in "Cut" did become very successful, they did not have success in the sport that they played. The characters instead became successful much later in life in their careers. If they had used their vivid memories of being cut to motivate them to achieve more in sports and later succeeded, then I would say that this story fits perfectly into the unit "The Glory and Inspiration of Sports." However, the readers do not even know if any of the characters that had been cut played any sports after the tragic postings of the rosters. Green's "Cut" is a very inspirational story. Each child is knocked down by either a couple words or a list on a paper, but uses the memory as fuel to their fiery ambitions. The kids realize that failing feels godawful, and they will do what every it takes to be successful. They all become successful and all of the readers become inspired. Despite how inspirational the piece might be, I still do not think that this piece has a place in this unit. The "inspiration of sports" should cover the ways that sports are inspirational. Sports may have is inspired those in the story, but it wasn't what happened in the sport that inspires the reader, rather it is what happens when they stop playing sports. "Cut" belongs in a Sports Literature unit, just not the "Glory and Inspiration of Sports" unit.
I think that "Cut" by Bob Green can fit in perfectly in that unit. The story “cut” fits in the inspiration category because of all the great examples the author gave, people being cut and broken down taking it to heart and trying there hardest to not fail and not be told "they are not good enough." The best example that supports my opinion is by Bob Graham when he said "I know that it changed me. I found out, even though i couldn't articulate it at the time, that there would be times in my life when certain people would be in a position to say 'you're not good enough' to me. I did not what that to happen again." Everything happens for a reason, sometimes it’s the worst memories of our lives that’s going to inspire us to become better people because we don’t want to live that moment ever again. I think the theme of this story fits perfectly in the unit and it was a good inspiration for us, to think back and know the reason we were told “we are not good enough” and try our hardest for it to not happen again.
I believe that "Cut" should be included in the unit about inspiration because it is a good story and a good example of how you can overcome adversity and succeed in life. The story shows how your life can experience ups and downs, and how even if you were not successful at one point in your life, it doesn't mean that you will be a failure forever. The story also shows how people that do experience adversity and failure in life can turn out different than people who always win and get everything handed to them. Bob Graham is a great example of this because of how he was cut. Graham never wanted to experience the feeling of not being "good enough" after how he felt when he was young. This changed him as a person and in my opinion helped him in his life. That is why the story is inspirational to me and why it should be included in "The Glory and Inspiration of Sports" unit.
I agree with placing "Cut" in this unit-The Glory and Inspiration of Sports -because even though they were cut from the team, that inspired and driven them to excel at anything and everything else. Being cut from a team hurts you, no matter who you are, it will affect you. The main characters in the story took the pain and the humiliation of being cut and turned that into something good. They turned it into a non-stop, all consuming ambition to never be cut again. They might not have realized it at the time, like Bob Graham. He said in the story, “I know now that it changed me. I found out, even though I couldn’t articulate it at the time, that there would be times in my life when certain people would be in a position to say ‘You’re not good enough’ to me. I did not want that to happen ever again.” Bob Graham was thirty six at the time this was written and he is a partner with a big time law firm. His story and all the others are similar in the way that they all became extremely successful. Though they did not become successful in a sport or really anything related to sports, I still firmly believe this story, their stories, belong in this unit because the sports they tried out for and did not make are the reason they are successful today in whatever they try to accomplish. Just like Malcolm Macpherson said in his story, “I will confess that my ambition, to this day, is out of control. It’s like a fire. I think the fire would have pretty much stayed in control if I hadn’t been cut from that team. But that got it going. …. Those of us who went through something like that always know that we have to catch the ball.” I think that how Malcolm explained it perfectly describes how all these men clawed their way out of the hurt and pain of being cut to make them successful as much as possible in their lives.
I do not agree that the story "Cut" belongs in this unit called "The Glory and Inspiration of Sports”. This unit is about how you were inspired to achieve something from sports. "Cut" is how not making a team inspired you to do better in life to prove that you don’t suck and that you can still have a successful life. This story is the opposite of the glory in sports; the people in this story never achieve anything in sports. In all the other stories we read or watched they inspired you though the sport. For example in the movie Hoosiers that the whole team was way over matched and they came though and won a state championship for the school. The story “Cut” is sadder then it is anything else even though the people in the story are very successful now, they all still remember the day they got cut from the team. In this unit I believe that the stories should be more inspired from the sports in a good way. That is why I do not think “Cut” belongs in this unit call "The Glory and Inspiration of Sports”.
I agree with cut being in the inspirational list because it tells how a person can be cut from the team because they said you weren't really good enough. And how people can take that and try to make themselves better and better. It makes a person want to become the best at something to prove to the person wrong that told them they weren't good enough. They want to show them that they are good enough and that they can do anything they put their mind to. I also don't agree with it being in the inspirational category because sometimes people don't take being cut from the team as well as others they let it get the best of them and they don't really try harder at all. They let that person make them feel like they really aren't good enough and that they will never be good enough. They just give up on that because they've been told they aren't good enough so that's what they start to believe. On the other hand the other people take being cut as a chance to make themselves better and to try harder so that nobody can ever tell them that they aren't good enough ever again
This unit should have the piece “Cut” in it because it helps show the flip side that goes with the glory and inspiration of sports. In this piece, we are shown five people who have lived successful lives due to the influences that sports have had on their life. “I have found that an inordinately large proportion of successful men share that same memory--the memory of being cut from a sports team as a boy.” They were cut from a sports team in high school or junior high and because of that event; they have pushed themselves towards success. Adversity often goes hand in hand with Inspiration and glory. George Washington isn't known as a great general because He macro managed the best army in the world, He’s renowned for leading an untrained and under-supplied army against the best army in the world. “…when you’re that age, and you’re searching for your identity, and all you want is to be told that you’re all right…” These people went on past these moments in their lives with a singular purpose. They would excel--because excellent people aren't cut from the team-- so that no one could ever tell them that they are inferior.
I think being cut does belong in the category of "The Glory and Inspiration of Sports". Without being cut, people would never have the experience of being told you suck or you’re good but not good enough or there is not enough room on the team for you. This will only make them want to become better and then go show up their old coaches and then say "if you weren't there during my struggle, I don't want to see you during my success." This quote can relate to most people we have read about because they were cut from their team and they begged for their spots back, but their coaches told them no. Now they are news anchors, newspaper writers, or other great jobs. Some of the kids who were cut did not make it big like the news anchor or the newspaper writer; they are the one who did not make it big. Sure, they did not go big like some people, but they are probably working a good job, but most of them cannot be like the others, but they still feel the same as the one who also got cut when they got cut but it must suck if they did not make it big.
Yes i agree with putting "Cut" in our unit about glory and inspiration about sports. Most professional athletes didn't start just from glory. They were "cut" when they were younger and that just made them so much stronger than they were back then. Even the best like Michael Jordan got cut from his basketball team. Sports isn't all about the glory, its how you got there, and what it took for you to get there. Because once you get cut, you start working harder and harder just so you could come back and prove every single person that doubted you in the beginning that you could really be the best. I was cut from my 8th grade soccer team, but i didn't give up and just quit the sport, because the coach told me i wasn't good enough. I kept on working every day of the summer on my skills and i got better. When i got my first start on Varsity as a goalie, i just wanted to go laugh right in that coaches face. Just because he told me i wasn't good enough. I was very sad in the beginning that i didn't make the team, but when i started to play in high school. If i saw him again, i would thank him for making me that much stronger and better. Most "All-stars" have had that feeling before. Those are the best sports stories.
I agree it should be included in our unit glory and inspiration. The story cut was a very inspirational story because the people who got cut from there team as a child went on to become very successful people. It is a story that i am glad is involved in this unit because it is a truly amazing story. I believe this because these people after even being cut worked there hardest to become something in their lives. This story cut really inspires me because if i work my hardest i will become something even if someone doesnt think im good at something or they think i cant do it because i'm not fit for the job. I love inspirational stories because they are my favorite, they motivate me to work my hardest and become something in life.
I think that the title "Cut" should be in the inspirational section. The reason why I think the cut should be in the inspirational section is because when you get cut you will try harder. I have never been cut from a team but I could only imagine what people go through. I had a friend tell me he got cut from the 6th grade basketball team and he went home crying. I’m sure he has the vivid memory like the players that got cut in the story. Just like the characters in the story my friend didn’t let that bring him down he pushed himself to do better at whatever he did and made sure he put full effort into everything he did. Now he is one of the best athletes in our school today. This is why this story should be in the inspirational section. It has people failing at first but then you see them succeed because they were hurt really bad getting cut and they didn’t want that to ever happen to them again so they pushed themselves to the limit to be as successful as they can be. This story would be very inspirational to people that have failed because they will see that as a chance to do better.
Yes I agree with placing "Cut" with our unit because that theme is an important part of sports. In the story, most of the character don't make the team except the last character.
ReplyDeletePutting “Cut” in the unit called “The Glory and Inspiration of Sports” was a good choice because being cut can inspire you to be better than you already are.
ReplyDeleteI think putting "Cut" in the unit "The Glory and Inspiration of Sports” was a good idea because it shows how athletes overcame the emotional stress of being cut from a team.
ReplyDeleteI think that "Cut" by Bob Green would be best suited in a different unit.
ReplyDeleteI think that "Cut" by Bob Green can fit in perfectly in that unit.
ReplyDeleteI believe that "Cut" should be included in the unit about inspiration because it is a good story and a good example of how you can overcome adversity and succeed in life.

ReplyDeleteI agree with placing "Cut" in this unit-The Glory and Inspiration of Sports -because even though they were cut from the team, that inspired and driven them to excel at anything and everything else.
ReplyDeleteHis story and all the others are similar in the way that they all became extremely successful.
ReplyDeleteI agree with cut being in the inspirational list because it tells how a person can be cut from the team because they said you weren't really good enough.
ReplyDeleteThis unit should have the piece “Cut” in it because it helps show the flip side that goes with the glory and inspiration of sports.
ReplyDeleteI think being cut does belong in the category of "The Glory and Inspiration of Sports".
ReplyDeleteYes i agree with putting "Cut" in our unit about glory and inspiration about sports.
ReplyDeleteI agree it should be included in our unit glory and inspiration.
ReplyDeleteI think that the title "Cut" should be in the inspirational section.
