In the chapter "School Days" in Friday Night Lights, Bissinger describes how little Permian High School prepares its students for life after they graduate. Explain what kind of job Reavis is doing for its kids.
Reavis does a good job to prepare it's students for college life; for the most part Reavis pushes it's kids to succeed. For the ACT Reavis has a unique program preparing us for the ACT in ACT homerooms, very original name I know. But nevertheless this homeroom is an invaluable experience which I believe has helped many kids get higher on their ACT, if they actually paid attention to the class. I know the ACT homerooms helped me for the ACT because it showed me what to expect from the test and how to approach it.
Reavis does prepare us for college life, but what about life outside college? we don't know how to pay the bills, how to sign a contract, how to buy a home, sure we learned how to receive a student loan, but what's the point if we don't know how to pay it back.
I think Reavis does a lot better job than what Permian does, but I think they can do a lot better. From what all I've heard from my college friends now is that Reavis does not prepare you for college. The teachers do not push us to our full potential. They lower to our standards.
Reavis doesn't prepare you at all for collage because it's not supposed to. Collage isn't recommended so they teach you more about life than collage unlike grade school.
I agree with DanieI, I think they should give the students the opportunity to learn how college life is going to be, so atleast you know what to expect once you start.
As a student at Reavis High School, I believe that most of our staff members do a poor job of preparing us for our future after high school. Several teachers don't challenge us enough and instead of exceeding school standards we try to meet them. This means that a myriad of students aren't as prepared as other districts. Some teachers only teach us the basics, however they do not relate them to owning a house, paying mortgages, paying taxes, and what lies ahead. Many people say that high school is the best years of their lives. I believe this is because after high school no one prepares us for what will happen next, which makes it harder for us to be successful. On the other hand, there are staff members that push us and want us to be the best we can be in life. Not only do they push us but, they don't give up on us. They realize that there isn't one tactic of teaching; everyone learns a different way at a different pace.
I agree with David here, but not only Reavis has this problem. Most high schools do not teach us the things we really need to know to be successful as grown ups. I have no idea how to pay bills or do any of that grown up buisness.
I really think Reavis does a great job preparing us for the ACT. Our daily teachers should be pushing us as hard as our ACT leaders do. If teachers did that out academic standard would raise. Teachers are not preparing us for life after high school.
I don't think Reavis prepares it's student for the life after High School. I think that Reavis has some classes that are pointless. My brother graduated from Reavis three years ago and he said "Reavis was joke". The standards for Reavis the past couple years have been below average. I think they need to push the kids way more to succeed
I agree, some teachers don't seem like they enjoy doing their job, it doesn't encourage us students to actually try in class, others don't push students to do better at all. There is some really pointless clases too that you are never ever in the future are going to need.
I think that Reavis prepares us better then Permian does, but at the same time I think that Reavis could do a better job. Some teachers don't push us as students to try are best. They make the classes easier so we can understand and not challenge us. At the same time though Reavis does help us out a little, for example, we have ACT homerooms that prepare us for the ACT. That gives students an example of what is going to be on the test. I personally have taken some business classes that I think helped me prepare for the future.
I think Reavis is doing an amazing job educating it's students and getting them ready for "the world". Most of the teacher si had pushed me to do My best, I really apreciate that and I think It will help me in the future. In the other hand not all the teachers are the same, some teachers seem to hate their job. They just sit down and give out assignments. That's not the proper way to learn. If you expect someone to be interested in your class, you should make it fun and interesting and I'm sure most of the Reavis teachers do that.
I don't think Reavis prepares us for college or pushes us to do our best. Most of the classes are pointless and the teachers don't make it any better when they act like they don't want to be there. My brother who graduate from Reavis a few years ago always tells me Reavis did not prepare him at all for college. I really think Reavis should try hard to push students and help us prepare for college better.
In Permian High School, football players do not care about school and academics just about the Friday night games. Neither the teachers do. All they care is about football and don't push the students into academics. Reavis High School is almost the same , we also like football and cant wait till Friday to see the game. The staff at Reavis actually teach you the class work you have to know. Unlike the teachers at Permian who rather show a movie or give out easy homework assignments that don't relate to the topic. Reavis prepares us better for college rather than Permian where football is their life. Their education level is so low that if the foot players don't make pro they have no where to go to college. But Reavis can still do a better job and actually get us more prepared for college bacuase they don't push us to the next level.
As a student at Reavis i personally think that most kids graduating are not ready for the real world. Reavis is nowhere near Permian academics though. Either way our teachers and staff don't really teach us the proper things we need to know for life after high school. I know a lot of people that graduated from Reavis and most of them call Reavis a joke. Almost every single day last year i went home with no homework and my parents always questioned why? All i could say was that the teacher didn't assign any again. Although we put academics before sports it doesn't really matter considering no one learns anything. I expect a teacher to push a student and help out, but it's the other way around at Reavis. In all honestly teachers don't care at all if you're failing. Lastly most classes at Reavis are pointless, some of the stuff they teach us won't help out in the real world.
I think Reavis prepares us a lot better for life after high school than Permian does, but i think Reavis can do a lot better to help us in our future. For example, when teachers see that we are struggling with an assignment, they make it easier for us instead of just helping us a little bit so we can do it on our own.
Some of the teachers at Reavis don't help a lot of student that fall back. I know a teacher in the school that doesn't even know who was in her class. She never helped any of us.
I think they're doing there job academically and athletic wise too. But it depends on the student too, if the student wants to succes in life he will do what it takes in school and out of school Also Permian doesn't do a good job because they just prepare they're students for football and that's it.plus there's other programs and classes in school that help like economics and other electives In reavis.you can learn about woods and electronics also.
I have to agree with you. The teachers in Reavis high school push student's to do good in highschool so later on in life they will succeed. Then in athletics the coaches put players further and further each day to make them better and succeed in that sport I honestly think Reavis is doing a great job in both departments.
Reavis high school has more than a few teachers that really go out there way to make sure students are ready for college. Even if the students only need the little push saying keep trying is alot more then the Permian staff of teaching. In Odessa football is the only thing they care about. In the Reavis community there are so many more opportunities. With that in mind, it gives more choice to students and some teachers encourage that.
In my opinion, I believe that Reavis is not preparing students for life after high school. My brother always talks about how he gets hours of homework a night and that it's nothing like high school. That's opposite in Reavis's case. Reavis barley gives homework that takes more than an hour to do. I believe that counselors should create a whole class for college stuff. For example, counselors should teach us how to get loans, scholarships, and apply for financial aid in one whole class. Instead, seniors take culinary or a blow off class to pass senior year.
As a current senior in Reavis High School, I don't think that Reavis does a good job at preparing us for life after High School. A lot of people that I talk to, who have graduated from Reavis, say that they weren't ready for life after high school.
Being a senior at Reavis and serving three years of my high school career there I think the staff is doing a mediocre job. There is a plethora of students and a teacher can only do so much to get the knowledge across. I do fell prepared for my future in auto mechanics all thanks to Mr. Gabe. He has taught me a lot of things through out the 7 weeks of school so far.
In my opinion I don't think that Reavis prepares us enough for our future. Reavis has some pointless classes that we take and aren't going to benefit us in our lifes. I have friends that graduted from Reavis, say that they weren't ready for the after life.
I think at reavis high school it depends on the person if our school prepares you for life after high school. I believe that each and every student takes school and athletics differently. Some take it very seriously and others don't care about them at all. I, personally, took classes that will prepare me for college. Electronics, computer repair, computer systems, web design, and introduction to computers are all classes that will help me to be successful in the field I want to go into. I take school very seriously and I think that I will be prepared for college.
I think Reavis high school does a great job in academics. I see teachers try to teach all the student, even the ones who don't wanna be there and don't wanna learn. Every school has kids who don't wanna learn and the kids who do wanna learn. A lot.of schools just leave the kids who don't wanna learn alone. Reavis teachers try to push those kids who don't wanna learn. Reavis in my eyes pushes kids to learn both the ones who don't wanna learn and the kids who do wanna learn.
I think that Reavis high school does a good job in it's academics; but I don't believe it prepares us for the future when we graduate. First of all, in Reavis high school we are taking a myriad of classes we don't necessarily need; When we graduate from high school we won't know how to buy a car, pay the bills, purchase a home, sign a contract and much much more; But I can tell you all about the pythagorean theorems; So yes I believe Reavis high school has great academics and no I don't believe its preparing us for the future.
I agree with you, it doesn't take a genius to pay the bills, but don't you think we should have some sort of clue on how to do it? you can't survive in the real world with just booksmarts, you gotta be street smart, plus when was the last time you used an equation from school in real life?
This is so true. I mean academically it does help us alot become more educated. In the after life though, theres not academic about dealing with money.
In my opinion, many of the Reavis classes don't actually prepare us for life. Don't get me wrong there are some specific classes that do get us ready for the real world. For example, economics does help educate students the cost of life, money and the world economically. Many other classes do help educationally, but not life wise. When you start your life after high school you wanna be educated on how to survive. You want to learn how to make money, learn how to get a good job and be responsible. I believe some very specific Reavis classes do help in the future. Other classes thought help education, but not the world that come after high school.
I agree with you, their are a myriad of classes that are point less. However, I think that economics is a class that should be required because it helps you learn how to spend your money and learn how to save.
Patrick I disagree with you , what I think is that Reavis doesn't do a great job on preparing us for the future because they don't push us hard enough to become smarter students, and I also feel that I haven't learned a lot from my 3 years in Reavis.

DeleteI agree with Zuk 100 percent, and I think this discribes Reavis perfectly. Most teachers lower their teaching abilities to our standards.

ReplyDeleteI agree with you that Reavis doesn't give out any home work, I think I spend like thirty minutes or so on homework each night.
DeleteI disagree because without homework and everything that need to be done by the student shows laziness. And that rolls right into real life too.
DeleteI disagree that Reavis does not give a lot of homework. All my friends from advanced classes always complain about how much homework they always get.
