  1. I think the after game handshake does show sportsmanship but I aged with the article. After going at it with an opponent for a whole game, things get heated. You start to build a small hatred for that person, and then maybe that person says something during handshakes and you hit him. During summer league basketball some kid from Lemont and I got into it. Then during handshakes he said something, but I controlled myself and didn't do anything. I just let it be. Handshakes are just a place for a fight to break out.

    1. Handshakes are a sign of maturity and respect. If you can't control yourself and show sportsmanship and shake your opponents hands when you lose you shouldn't be on the team.

    2. Handshakes after games are to show the other players respect and to tell them how good they did, and like you said you controlled yourself knowing the consequence.

  2. The post-game handshake should be kept as a signal of respect. Shaking hands with your opponent whether you lose or win is a sign or respect and loyalty to the game. If you can't handle a simple thing like that then maybe you should stay off the field. There is no reason to start a fight, all you must do is prove yourself on the field. If you lose then who cares, concentrate on the next game. It sucks losing but getting into a fight is just going to make it worse. Your team might kick you off or suspend you. It's not worth it and in the end you need to be the bigger person. I personally don't like the idea of just walking off the field after the game. Shaking hands signifies a good game.

    1. I completely agree with you. The handshake is a sign of respect and if you can't handle it you shouldn't be on a team.

  3. I think that it is a bad idea to not allow players to shake hands after the game. Its a sign of sportsmanship that every player needs to have. I know from my personal experience that sometimes the only way I get to tell a player good job is when were shaking hands after the game. Its the coach's responsibility to make sure nothing bad happens.

    1. I agree that it's the coaches responsibility to make sure nothing happens. They can choose whether or not to shake hands.

    2. I agree that the handshake should be kept. I disagree that it's the coaches responsibility to make sure nothing happens though. A coach shouldn't think their athletes are going to get in a fight during the handshake, if your coach does think that then the coach should reconsider that athlete.

    3. I agree, when I played sports that was really the only time I can tell the players good job.

    4. I agree with you Ashley, a coach shouldn't expect his players to get in a fight, but sometimes emotions are high if the game ends close, and that's where a coach should take notice and tell his players to still show sportsmanship.

    6. I agree with you Jorge, at the end of games emotions are high and you never how some people might react to that. Except the coaches, they have a bond with players and notice these things.

    7. I am in agreement with you Jorge because that is the only way to tell a player good job unless he is a good friend of yours, because if it wasn't for the handshake no one would go to the other side of the day just to say good job.

  4. Well I think if a player starts a fight in the line they should just be kicked from the game and if it keeps happening every game they should be kicked from the sport.

    1. If you get into a fight during a post-handshake, you have no business playing a sport with other team members that you can possibly harm.

  5. The post game hand shake is a sport tradition that has been going on for as long as I can remeber. Every orgainized sport I have played in at the end of every game the teams have lined up and shake hands and not once have I seen a fight break out. The post game should go on until the players themselves decide no to do it anymore. If a fight does break out during the post game hand shake it is the player who started its fault and that player and the persone he or she started it with should be suspended from the next game or two to learn his or her lesson if he or she does it again they should be kicked off the team.

    1. I really think Jordan took this too far with trying to kick players off the team for one mistake. Everybody makes mistakes and learns for them.

    2. I don't think Jordan went to far Khari. I think if that player doesn't learn from their suspension and starts another fight her or she shall be kicked off the team.

  6. I think this is a terrible call to try to get rid of the post game handshake among the players. The post game handshake is more of a sign of respect for your competition and if you can't even do that, you shouldn't be playing. At any level of competition there should be a mutual respect for your opponent. If this mutual respect is lost there is no point in playing sports or games with other people. This fine for doing post game handshake should be removed, even if something happens.

  7. I have seen and heard of fights breaking out during the handshake at the end of games but i still think that is no reason to stop them from happening. The handshake shows good sportsmanship between the two teams. I feel that if they stop the handshake it doesnt mean they are going to stop fights from happening, people will still fight if they want. The handshake is a tradition and i feel that it should not be put to an end because of some immature players, if they are that immature they shouldn't be on a team.

    1. I agree with you, the handshake is a way to show union between two rivals, it shows that no matter the outcome of a game you still had fun and did a good job. If they were to remove it, it will kill the tradition

  8. I never personally had a problem with anyone during post game handshakes but after reading this article I realized that whats being said is true. Fights can breakout though post-game hand shake and even though its meant for sportsmanship people could get in conflict with the other team player and a fight could break out. I think a wave would be better from far away instead of a handshake.Post-game Handshakes should be stopped in my opinion.

  9. The decision of post game handshakes should be allowed. Its a sign of good sportsmanship after playing a game against the opponent. During my soccer games after they end I always want to shake up and tell them good game. Its a sign of respect and loyalty. If a fight does break out there should be always someone to break it up or prevent it from happening . When players do talk smack when we shake hands hands it motivates me to play harder next time.

    1. I agree, if a person after the game comes up to me and tells me good game, I gain a tremendous amount of respect for that person.

    2. I agree with you Damien it does make you play harder if your opponent is taking smack to you.

  10. I have personally witnessed an attack on someone during the post-game handshakes. You don't expect that kind of behavior from athletes. Athletes should be setting the example. I believe that handshakes after should be allowed. If you are not mature enough to handle losing, then why are you playing a sport? To me, post-shakes is sign of wanting to do better against them next time you play them.

    1. I agree with you, if you play the sport you love you should have some respect for others. They should not be attacking other players when they line up to shake hands.

    2. I completely agree, playing a sport is like a privilege, you have to earn to play it. If you are dumb enough to fight then you should not be allowed to play the sport.

  11. I think that the handshake after the game should be let alone. The coaches should decide whether or not too shake hands after the game depending on how the game went. If there weren't no cheap shots or any bad blood, than they should let them shake hands. If there was, the coaches should think twice about it.

    1. Agree, if your a coach and see dirty hits or can tell that there is some hatred between the teams, there shouldn't be handshakes

  12. I think sportsmanship is the most important thing in sports. Although, from my experience from post game handshaking I have witnessed a fight break out in the middle of the field. I think that there is a lot of hatred on the field after any crucial lost against a rival or a regular team. Personally if my team lost by a close one I wouldn't want to shake hands with my opponent. Therefore, i think that there shouldn't be a post game handshake.

  13. I think they shouldn't banned the after game handshake and should let the teammates and coaches decide if they want to shake the other team's hand. If they didn't have any problems with the other team they were facing then , yea they should handshake each other, but if they were talking bad stuff to each other then, they shouldn't handshake because it might lead them to end up fighting.

    1. I agree, there should be a split decision on wether or not to have the post-game handshake

  14. A after game handshake should always be done. During the game things can get rough. People talk alot and like to get inside your head. People should learn to put that aside after the game. So during the handshake you should just put the game and all the talking aside and even a fight during a game if one happens.

  16. I believe that post-game handshakes are a way to help teach sportsmanship. Instead of banning them, the KHSAA, should ban any player for fighting. The KHSAA is taking the wrong approach to stop these fights by turning their back on sportsmanship. For example, rugby teams in Oregon must provide a meal for after the game for both teams and require a handshake. If Oregon can have peaceful handshakes and eat with the other team, then why isn't Kentucky? Maybe, they are not promoting sportsmanship if parents are chasing referees. I think the KHSAA is making the wrong choice.

    1. I agree with you because here at Reavis the coaches strongly preach about sportsmanship. Maybe the coaches from Kentucky really don't emphasize that much on sportsmanship.

  17. I think that shaking hands after games is suppose to be a sign of respect. The moment when u shake the other team players hand you also show sportsmanship. I think the KHSAA shouldn't ban that tradition. If any players try to fight I think they should be punished. They should be suspended and/or fined.

    1. I agree with the punished part but, fined is alittle over the top in my opinion. If anything, they should just be suspended for a period of time.

    2. I agree with you Felipe, fining the player is going to far. But Szymon I also agree with you that they shouldn't ban the handshake because it does show sportsmanship and respect.

  18. People think that shaking hands before a game shows good sportsmanship, Many people would agree that sportsmanship is very important in any kind of game because it shows respect between one another, but I personally disagree, I believe that many of these teams hate each other and would do anything to beat the opposing team. I also believe that shaking hands before the game is like going to war but shaking hands with the enemy for good luck first.

  19. I think that shaking hands after a game shows respect and that it shouldn't be banned. If your a school like KHSAA and get into a conflict after every game then maybe it should be considered. Other than that every school should go and shake hands with the other team because it shows good sportsmanship no matter if you won or loss.

  20. I think shaking hands is a way to show respect, no matter the outcome of the game that shouldn't Incourage you to start a fight just because the other team was just simply better than yours. I don't think the hand shake after a game should be banned, just because other school has been having trouble with its athletes doesn't mean we get banned. I personally haven't seen a fight during my four years of playing sports

  21. I think that the post-game handshake is a sign of good sportsmanship and a respect for the game. With that, I completely disagree with the KSHAA and their decision on banning this tradition. Those who start fights should be kicked off the team do to the zero talerance policy that should be anforced.

    1. I disagree with zero tolerance because, sometimes games get intense and people can snap at any moment.

    2. I disagree with you on the zero tolerance Felipe. I think all players make mistakes at least one time especially after a big lose. They should b suspended for at least one game and if they do the same thing again, then you can kick he/she off the team.

    3. I agree with you Felipe, sometimes kids have to learn the hard way.

  22. The post game handshake is a sign of respect and i wish it could be done without any problems. Unfortunately, that almost never happens because there always is a winner and a loser. Usually the team that loses says something stupid or provocative during the post game handshake and that when fights happen. I agree that there shouldn't be post game handshakes to keep peace on the field and not ruin the love for the sport.
