Racism in Friday Night Lights

One of the themes Bissinger emphasizes in FNL is racism.  How would you describe race relations both in the community of Burbank and Reavis High School?  Are there any similarities to Odessa and Permian High School?

  1. I don't think Reavis high school and Burbank is similar to Permian high school and Odessa. In Odessa racism is big. The whole town is segregated. Burbank is a friendly neighborhood that accepts all races. There are many arabics, polish, spanish, irish, and blacks in reavis high school and everybody is treated the same.

    1. Reavis is a very racial accepting school in statistics and most kids but there is still racism in small ways though every school has a little racism.

    2. Yes i agree, but in some issues they do discriminate against each other. Not alot though compared to how life is between blacks and whites in Odessa.

    3. there's always little problems like racism but at Reavis it doesnt even come close to what it is in Permian High School.

  2. I don't see any similarities in Reavis or Burbank in this matter. Burbank is a really friendly town and and everyone is kind to each other. There is a big mixture of races in Burbank and Reavis and everyone gets along. Everyone is treated equally around here.

    1. There is a big mixture of racism and this school is very accepting for all of them.

    2. There is some similarities in some cases but we just dont realize it. It's not a great of a hatred as in the city of Odessa would be.

    3. I agree i think their are no similarities because if Odessa respects blacks the only reason I could think of is because they play football.

    4. I agree with you on the fact that Burbank and Reavis are not like Permian and Odessa with racism. Even though they aren't alike there will still always be the people who are racist and who aren't.

  3. Reavis and permian high are very different schools. Reavis accepts all races and none is treated differntly at reavis. But at permian it seems like they praise the good football players but treat all the others not the same.

    1. I agree, they give I much power to the football community in Permian High

    2. I agree they do treat the good football players better but if they weren't good at football they wouldn't care much about them.

    3. I agree they give to much praise to the good players and treat the others like nothing .

    4. I agree with this but I think the athletes in reavis get treated a little differently than other students

    5. True but we're not really big in football mostly in different sports.

  4. I really don't think Burbank has a major problem with racism as Odessa. Burbank and Reavis high school is alot more accepting of other races with there differences. Reavis high school puts a huge afford towards making sure every student, no matter what race has the best chance of getting better educated and getting a better life. On the other side of the country in Odessa, Texas they don't care about the future of the other race students and want to use them for there ability.

    1. I agree each race hangs out with different groups of friends without being judged.

  5. Racism in Odessa is a big thing in the book they just recently desegregated the school district and the town but still they are mostly separated. Burbank compared to Odessa is not even close to being racist in Odessa's standards. Reavis High School is not even close to being segregated we have Mexicans, Polish, Arabs, Blacks, and Whites; compared to Permian with 99% white and some Blacks and Mexicans.

    1. Yeah our school has many races and we all accept each other's races for the most part.

    2. Yeah reavis has different races and were all acceped. I agree with the most part.

    3. I agree, Reavis has all different kinds of races and i do not know anyone in our school that has a problem with it.

    4. I agree with you Jordan, Burbank is not even close to be compared

  6. I think, Burbank and Reavis High School, are both racially acceptant. Burbank and Reavis have many, many racial groups and are treated fairly. Unlike Odessa and Permian, were it is racially segregated, Burbank and Reavis are the opposite. There is no comparison between Burbank and Odessa

    1. I think that you are right there is no comparison between Burbank and Odessa.

    2. I also agree with you and Jorge there is absolutely no comparison between Odesa and Burbank.

    3. I also agree that you can not even compare the two schools because Reavis is filled with different races, but Permian only has a couple different ones.

    4. I think the big reason why Reavis is not racist is because racism wasn't that bad in the north unlike the south

  7. In my opinion, I don't think Reavis has a big issue in racial equality. Compared to Odessa and Permian High School it is drastically less. Yes, there is of course some descrimination in Reavis and almost every school. Although, in Permian, they were segregated and treated way worse then in Burbank and Reavis High School. In are city, usually groups tend to stay with the same ethnic group but wont discriminate as harshly as in Odessa would.

    1. I agree with what your saying. There always will be some racist kids in every school. But our school and community is way better than Odessa

    2. I agree Moe, no matter what there will always be a person judging by someones skin color. However I believe that since Odesa just ended segregation it took them more time to cope with it then use because we were already born into an era of equality.

    3. I strongly agree with that. Reavis doesn't have race issues at all

  8. I think that Burbank and Reavis are acceptable with all races. There is a variety of races in Reavis and that doesn't seem to be a big problem unlike Odessa. In Odessa there was segregation problems. Black players got treated like gods on the field but off the field it was a different story.

    1. I agree I feel there is no favoritism between Africans and non-africans, everyone is treated equal based on talent.

    2. I agree with you Jorge, I believe that there really isn't a problem with race.

    3. I agree, black players were treated better than most on the field but off the field, they might as well have been just "another Nigger."

    4. I also agree too. It was messed up how it was back in the day. If you weren't white n didn't have talent, you weren't anything.

      Delete
    5. I agree, they only liked blacks when they played football but in reavis they accept all races equally.

  9. I believe that there isn't any racism in Reavis or Burbank. We accept all races and get alone well. There is a difference between the book and Burbank. In Burbank, African Americans are something even if they don't play football.

  10. Our race relations here in Burbank are far different from race relations in Odessa. In Burbank we have a pretty good mix of races. For the most part we all know how to work together and there isn't much discrimination. On the other hand in Odessa, blacks and Mexicans are targeted because of race.

    1. I agree that mexicans and blacks were targeted due to the fact of their skin color.

    2. I agree because everyone is different here and all accepted.

  11. There is a big difference between Odesa and Burbank. In Burbank ou can be accepted by everyone no matter what race you are but in Odesa if you weren't white or a good football player you were treated differently.

    1. Not just treated different, you were treated like a worthless piece of poop and whites wanted nothing to do with you

    2. That is very true, the only time the two different races would actually interact with each other was during a football game, which united both races no matter what their differences. And enjoy a amazing game of football in harmony.

  12. Reavis high school is way different then Permian. District 122 allows any race to attend reavis. Unlike Odessa there was segregation problems. In burbank there is different reglions and their all accepted. Also were not a big football community like permian is.

    1. I agree with you.Reavis is not that huge in football like Permian. Maybe if they were, they would win more games?

  13. I don't think there is any racism in Reavis or around Burbank. Everyone is treated equally in school and out of school . Compared to Permian in Odessa, its not even close to being that bad. In Odessa blacks would be picked and laughed on if they didn't play football. When they played football for Permian they were praised like gods.If you didn't play football in Reavis and you were black, you would be still treated equal.

    1. I agree, in Odessa they only accept blacks if theyre on the field and deny them outside of the field, in reavis everyone is accepted and treated equally.

  14. I don't think that Permian High or Odessa is similar to Reavis High or Burbank because there is no segregation between Burbank like in Odessa. There are many different races. At Reavis when you walk down the hallways you see almost all of them, and nobody gets picked on because of what they are.

  15. If we were down south, I believe Reavis would have Racism, but since we are up north n it wasn't as bad here as it was in the south, when racism was a huge problem.

  16. I believe that racism is not very discernible in Reavis High School and Burbank. People in Reavis rarely use racism, but when they do they use it in humor not meaning to offend anyone. Unlike Odesa, when they use racism to discriminate and put down people. Also Reavis is like a melting pot with many races in the community. In Odesa it is completely opposite with the school being a majority white.

  17. Reavis and Permian High schools are really different from each other because Reavis accepts all student no matter what skin color they are and if they play sports or not. Other reason between Reavis and Permian High School is that everyone is treated the same.

  18. Burbank and Reavis i think have no similarities to Odessa and Permian. Burbank and Reavis accepts any type of race, on the other hand Odessa has no respect for any body thats not white. But, Permian sort of has respect for blacks because that is their entertainment. They fans love watching them play football.

  19. Reavis high school is different from Odessa because Reavis is not a racist school, some people in Reavis are racist but there is no way you can compare it with Odessa, Odessa is really racist and believes that if black people aren`t good in football they are useless, while in Reavis they will accept you from wherever you are from whatever race or skin color you have Reavis will always be there for you.

    1. I agree with you, Reavis compared to Odessa and Permian is not racist at all, they only like certain peoe because they were good at a sport, other than that they wouldn't interact with you

  20. I think racism is not very common l at Reavis and Burbank. Everyone gets along just fine no matter the race, skin color or religion. Unlike Permian and Odessa, they used the "N" word on the daily basis and they didn't think at that time it was offensive towards the black People, it really is if you use it nowadays. If they do it's most likely playing around but not used as a way to offend anyone

    1. I agree with you on that because racism in Odessa is very out in the open and in Burbank it's not very known of.

  21. I believe Reavis and Burbank is nothing like Permian and Odessa l when it comes to racism. Reavis and Burbank welcome many races unlike Odessa and Permian. Permian and Odessa has racism that is out in the open and known. In Burbank and Reavis of course you have your people who will be racist but it's not known and out in the open like in Odessa.
